iPhone 8 GPS problems

There is no good reason to turn WiFi and Bluetooth off. You gain nothing.

Is the 6S on iOS 11? Because I have a 5S and 6S that were both fine but the GPS now poor on them like the X since I installed iOS 11 on them.

I never heard of that. What app are you using to test your GPS/locations? I recommend GPS Diagnostic.

iPhone 8 Plus here - doesn't sound as bad as your experience, but accuracy is significantly worse than my iPhone 6, to the extent that it sometimes puts me on the wrong road while navigating. Last night (indoors) I watched it slowly drift 200 metres away over a couple of minutes. iPhone 6 doesn't exhibit the same behaviour in the same environment.

Speaking of logs, my phone is constantly spewing about 20 of these a second - wonder if it's related:

Not just me either (mind you this post is about iPhone 7 on iOS 11)... iOS 11 locationd spewing errors

OK so I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store. They suggested that I do a full reset leaving my data on the phone which still did not work. The next step was to erase all data and settings and factory reset back to zero. This time set it up as a new iPhone and do not restore from backup. That was a no go for me. I restored to my old phone which is still working fine and I returned the stupid iPhone 8 Plus.

I was working with Apple on this and they enabled debug logging on my phone for a day and then collected about 500MB of log files. They also wanted some screen shots of the maps showing my location and wanted me to mark up on the screen shot where I was actually standing so they can see how inaccurate it is. I sent this to them a week and a half ago and as of yesterday they are still working on it. I'm tempted to try IOS 11.1 beta 3 to see if there is a difference.

That's an invalid generalization. Depends on many factors, such as building materials and surrounding environment. For me, it was upstairs in a 2-storey house in a suburban setting, where I typically get a weak but usable signal from several satellites. Here's a screenshot from a GPS diagnostic app in the same place this morning to illustrate.

Whether it's diagnostically relevant is hard to say as there are so many other factors - base-station triangulation, Wi-Fi-based estimation, etc. but I can say some things for sure:

- it initially had my location quite accurately, whichever way it obtained it

- it drifted slowly but steadily to a point 200m away

- I have been using location-based apps in the same location indoors for years on iPhone 6 and have *never* seen a drift anywhere close to this magnitude

So whether the difference is in the GPS hardware, different weighting of the various location mechanisms (due to software, hardware, relative quality of antennas or other reasons), differences in power saving policies, Galileo support on the new phone doing something hinky, or none of the above I can't say, but I mentioned it in case it might point someone in the right direction.

Update from last.

I've attempted the troubleshooting suggested in this thread, and I've also discussed it with apple support again. They've said to go into the apple shop to swap over the phone (to be on my third iPhone 8).

This morning I also updated to iOS 11.1

I went for a drive, and with an iPhone 6 sitting right next to the iPhone 8 recorded a couple of videos showing that the GPS on the iPhone 8 is still unacceptable.

Thus so far, the new iOS update, and all the trouble shooting suggested in this thread, and by apple, does not fix the GPS problems. I can't help but think that due to being an early adopter, there was a dodgy batch of GPS chips put into the phones.

I'm going to the apple store in an hour to get ANOTHER swap out - or just a refund, I'm sick of this in a premium device.

No offense, but there’s no rhyme or reason. I’ve read people “solve” this by putting the phone in landscape mode. I’ve literally recreated it by putting it in landscape mode.

They are clueless, save yourself the aggravation of trying to figure it out. They don’t even know if it’s hardware or software.

I’m having the same problem with my iPhone X. GPS doesn’t keep up and drifts, making it unusable. Contacted phone support who scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for me. They swapped the phone but I’m having the same issue with the new phone too.

FWIW, I've found the opposite where I can sometimes replicate this issue ONLY by putting the phone in landscape mode while portrait mode may be working fine. Just another interesting data point.

And I wholly agree that this is far more widespread than they are letting on. People are still being told to just replace their phones when Apple engineers 100% are aware of this and (purposely?) not filtering word down because they haven't even be able to figure out the cause of it let alone a solution.

Yes, I am also in correspondence with Apple support regarding this. I think it is starting to look more and more like a hardware problem. I used Google maps on a long drive and although it remained accurate for some of it, it acted wildly erratic at a crucial motorway junction. I previously had the iPhone 5s - no problem like this. Am I correct that Apple has used a new GPS module in the 8 and X phones? If it is hardware, I can't really see how Apple can avoid recalling all 8 and Xs currently out in the wild.
