iPhone 8 GPS problems

iPhone 8 doesn't have GPS as far as I know. It uses AGPS instead, witch I don't like because it USES CELLULAR DATA. The point is, no signal = no GPS. Thats as far as I know. You could also contact Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE

It seems to be hit or miss. My 8+ and my wife's 7+ have no GPS issues. I did check and our phones were made in the last couple of months. Maybe yours was made earlier than week 36 of this year. Worth a check.

Yeah, it's been a bit annoying really. I really don't think it is hardware related as all new iPhones would be seeing this problem, which seems to not be the case. If three units were no different it must be a) bad! luck and b) something to do with the software.

A Google Maps update made things worse yesterday as the direction arrow became very sluggish in adjusting to changes in my position. It would be good if everyone can keep reporting this to Apple.

I filled out the report, doesn’t hurt to make sure they know there are lots of people affected.

I also think anyone who has the means should try having their phones replaced as much as possible. They may see the financial burden, however small, and decide to do something about it. If I didn’t live an hour and a half away from an Apple store I would get mine swapped out.

I'm late to the party but also have an iPhone X. GPS is completely useless it wanders all over the place, even while stopped at a light. I hated to, but I returned the phone and case to apple for a refund. I plan to wait until the issue is resolved and then just buy a new one I don't have time to fool with this and its not like my iPhone 7 was junk.

I think the main issue is that the GPS issue won't happen to everyone because of the specific way it gets impacted. My GPS on the X works perfect in other people's cars. If I had one of their cars I would never know there is an issue. Because I have my car the GPS doesn't and will not work with an iPhone X or 8.

I unfortunately don't think this issue will go viral or be some type of "gate" because of the specific way it causes GPS to fail for specific people. And it will never be as wide spread as the stupid auto-correct issues that effects everyone.

If it works in one car it's not necessarily a software bug, though something in those cars may interfere with GPS reception.

Regardless, there is nothing we can do about it here, so returning your device may be your best course of action should you experience this problem.

This has been interesting, my problems have mainly been playing Pokémon go. My sister, a friend and myself have all experienced this problem I drive a Ford Focus, my sister has a Fiesta and my friend has a Nissan Maxima. They have all experienced the issues and it is irrelevant where we sit in the car as we can be riding together and all experience the issues intermittently, in any car we are in. I have also had the problem outside of the car as well so I don’t believe it is entirely related to a car, but maybe certain cars agitate the issue.

The odd part is The problem seems to have corrected itself for all three of us, it was around the time a Pokémon go update released, maybe they found a bug and were able to somehow correct the issues for their app loosing gps. Also odd though, I used google maps extensively this weekend and didn’t have a single problem with it either. I don’t know if the problem is fixed or not but I haven’t noticed it for about a week now.

Well count me as one of the many people still having GPS issues with their iPhone 8 Plus. I got my phone about 2 months ago and the GPS has been unusable since day 1. Multiple issues. Often when at a complete standstill my position will float around the screen. What is most common though is the constant freezing of my position on the screen while driving. This occurs whether I am using the built in Maps, Google Maps or Waze.

I still have my old iPhone 6 Plus that I gave to my daughter when I upgraded to the 8, so I did a test. I entered the same destination into both the 6 and the 8 and started driving. My position on the 8's screen would randomly freeze throughout the drive, sometimes for more than a mile at a time. Then my position on the screen would suddenly jump and catch up to my real location and work fine for a few seconds before freezing again. This process repeated itself throughout a ten mile drive. Meanwhile, the 6 that was sitting right next to it never froze once during the entire drive. Both are running iOS 11.2 and both are on the Verizon network.

After several weeks of trying multiple iOS updates, settings resets, and complete factory resets of my 8 Plus with no success, I finally went back to the Apple store today and was given a brand new iPhone 8 Plus. Sadly, the new 8 Plus is exhibiting the exact same problems. The phone was even set up as new phone without restoring a backup. This is beyond frustrating.

Early batches? Nope. I am oan my fourth iPhone X at the moment. I have been in touch with Apple tech for over a month now, having submitted everything they have so far asked me for. Including setting up as new, submitting videos of the problem, trying multiple apps etc etc.

My current phone seems to be the least affected as navigating with GPS is possible, if a little annoying. I personally think that this is software- I recorded a run with my phone and it tracked really well. At any rate, I agree that Apple will not do anything at all, unless there is a pretty big outcry.

As with others here, I get the problem even when walking, in my case in an open park with full sky view, so while it's quite likely there are multiple separate issues, at least some of them have nothing to do with interference from cars or anything else.

We don't have Apple Stores in my country, so I had to send mine to Apple for "repair". It came back as "could not reproduce issue" and an assurance that the device meets their quality standards. Since then I'm just waiting around hoping they'll finally figure it out and initiate a replacement scheme for affected devices.

We have a VW Golf and one of our iPhone X has all the issues, the other iPhone X works perfectly. It can not be the car interference alone that makes our one iPhone X go crazy since it’s just the same when walking on the street. The bad X is with Apple Repair now. If they return it with the same issues, I’ll go nuts.

I may be a little rusty from my experimental design days in college but I’m not sure about Apple’s suggestion that my Hyundai is the problem.

Note that issues while walking are extremely dependent upon things like where you are walking.

For example, GPS will often get your location wrong if you don't have Wi-Fi enabled and are walking in a major city because the buildings block GPS signals, and phones will have to resort to Wi-Fi location tracking to try to narrow down where you are.

That's why shutting off Wi-Fi will get you the admonition that doing so will reduce location accuracy.

By the way, GPS is only accurate to about five meters, or 16 feet, so it's not surprising if it sometimes gets wrong what side of a street you are on unless the street is a major thoroughfare.

The reason I’m leaning towards software vs hardware is because location services use a LOT of different things other than just GPS. Cell triangulation, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. A hardware issue would be comprehensive and involve a lot more issues than just Maps losing you as you drive.
