Apple Notes keeps crashing in iOS11

Hope you can help me, I appreciate your input and suggestions. FYI... I usually upgrade my iPhone every two years and upgrade to the most advanced Apple device that Apple offers. I’ve been using my current iPhone 7+ 256gb for almost a year now, with no issues. I have been using Apple Notes for many years with no issues prior to my recent upgrade to iOS11. I just upgraded to iOS 11 the day of the release and have now noticed that Notes is always crashing. I do use Notes quite extensively. After a couple a crashes, I think tried exiting Notes, it often resets itself and then crashes again. I have tried both hard and soft re-boots, but that doesn’t help... Any ideas? Thanks in advance... Rob

My problem seems to be solved. I went back and compared my most recent notes on the iPhone against the same notes in iCloud. Found about 15 that were out of sync (the iPhone version was correct since that is where I edit most of them, thus confirming what I knew before: that my sync problem was originating on the iPhone). I then copied each of the notes that were out of sync emailed them to myself, and copied and pasted them into my Mac notes app. They all synced fine through iCloud and onto my iPhone. I then went back a year to verify there were no problems with other notes. All other notes were in sync. I then turned note off on my iPhone, this deleting them from the device. I lastly turned Notes on in my iPhone. All downloaded from iCloud to my iPhone. I tested the sync process by creating a new note on my iPhone. It IMMEDIATELY synced to both iCloud and my Mac. Problem solved!

I feel your pain Alan!!! As TheHardt says, below we appear to be on this sinking iOS ship together. See my Notes iOS 11 upgrade fail below... I believe the only solution is on Apple’s end not ours. As a temporary measure, I slowly copied and pasted (as fast as the iOS crashes would let me) my most critical Notes to Evernote for the time being... not replacement for Nites or a perfect or long term solution, but less frustrating than the iOS crashing. Stay tuned...

I think I was able to isolate the root cause - I added this one link - WebDriver Support in Safari 10 | WebKit in one of the notes. The first sign of trouble was that this link got added as a large image even though the other links added before and after this one were rightfully added as small images. The instability symptoms - freezing, crashing started showing up immediately. After deleting that one link from the note, and keeping the other links as is, Notes is running well.

I dropped from 1501 notes to 1147. Still a decent amount of notes. The program is significantly faster. Almost all of the Evernote links were broken. I checked each one before I deleted them. I think these broken links could not be resolved by the notes search engine. My notes always hung up during searches, or trying to open notes after a search so I think this is not related to note volume.

I have this same issue in the latest. I even wiped and restored. I have 4000+ notes that I can’t work with on iPhone but have no issue on Mac and iPad Pro. My phone however, like most, is what I gave with me when I need to add to my notes. So for my purposes, like I suspect is the case for many, Apple does not have a functioning note taking App on its device. My solution was to buy Drafts and when finished I export the note to Noted where I will hopefully see it later. Checklists I moved to Reminders since I can’t use Notes to check off my lists. This is very basic functionality that has been broken and not acknowledged for months. These notes are very important to my job so iOS is not something I can consider Enterprise ready anymore nor can I recommend to friends.

Hi Jen,

I’m not sure why your post was deleted? I don't work for Apple, but I’m sorry to hear of your iOS troubles with Notes, as you can see via this thread I can relate and I emphasize with you. The issues are for iOS, the OSX version is fine, which does offer an escape plan, see below.

This is my recommendation, assume that Apple Notes is no longer an option any further and try another note taking platform that works for you. Read the posts in this thread which offer alternatives for you. I’m not saying they are perfect, (what is?). Reluctantly and sadly, I abandoned Apple Notes because of these issues, I initially switched back to Evernote for the short term many many weeks ago and have gradually transitionied to Microsoft OneNote. It’s a bit of overkill and has taken awhile to acclimatize, but it’s stable and is working for me, I’m still learning how to use it. Perhaps you can try transferring your Apple Notes on your OSX desktop to the OSX desktop of Microsoft OneNote and start your transition that way, that’s what I did. Hope this helps.

I’m not happy with the current situation with iOS Notes, but I had to move on and not view it negatively any further. I took control of my situation, found an alternative that works for me and moved on from this. “This too shall pass”, first world problems right?

Here is my perspective and my personal opinion, I’ve seen many attempts within this iOS thread to resolve this that have never worked for me in a stable way. I believe that the next major iOS update (12?) is our best hope for a resolution. 11.3 could resolve it, but who knows? Like I said I took control of my notes needs and sadly transitioned away from Apple to another platform. Upcoming Apple iOS updates could resolve this, but I will check that out when it happens, right now my notes needs are taken care of with my own solution.

I own just about every Apple tech you can think of, and in many cases more than one (Watch, iPads, Apple TV, timecapsules, iMacs, Thunderbolt displays etc.) and have a significant investment in Apple iOS and OSX, and was I disappointed and disheartened with this whole ordeal at the beginning? Yes, but there is no other platform that works for me like Apple... sure Apple has its shortcomings, but overall the Apple environment is far more superior than the other alternatives, but that’s just me. Apple stuff for the most part works... again, this is my opinion, maybe I have become numb with this whole thing.

Hope this helps 😊

Does anyone know when the general release of the iOS 11.3 should be available? I can’t believe It’s not out yet. Apple seems to have fixed these problems in the update. I and other users here have found success with the beta version of 11.3. I have it on all 4 of my devices. For well over a month now there’s been no issues in the Notes app of any kind. My iPhones and iPads, overall, appear to be be faster and more responsive, and battery life is better also. I use the Notes app heavily (almost 3000 notes with pictures, links and many copy/pastes), so for me, this was a very welcomed relief.
