Apple Notes keeps crashing in iOS11

Hope you can help me, I appreciate your input and suggestions. FYI... I usually upgrade my iPhone every two years and upgrade to the most advanced Apple device that Apple offers. I’ve been using my current iPhone 7+ 256gb for almost a year now, with no issues. I have been using Apple Notes for many years with no issues prior to my recent upgrade to iOS11. I just upgraded to iOS 11 the day of the release and have now noticed that Notes is always crashing. I do use Notes quite extensively. After a couple a crashes, I think tried exiting Notes, it often resets itself and then crashes again. I have tried both hard and soft re-boots, but that doesn’t help... Any ideas? Thanks in advance... Rob

My problem seems to be solved. I went back and compared my most recent notes on the iPhone against the same notes in iCloud. Found about 15 that were out of sync (the iPhone version was correct since that is where I edit most of them, thus confirming what I knew before: that my sync problem was originating on the iPhone). I then copied each of the notes that were out of sync emailed them to myself, and copied and pasted them into my Mac notes app. They all synced fine through iCloud and onto my iPhone. I then went back a year to verify there were no problems with other notes. All other notes were in sync. I then turned note off on my iPhone, this deleting them from the device. I lastly turned Notes on in my iPhone. All downloaded from iCloud to my iPhone. I tested the sync process by creating a new note on my iPhone. It IMMEDIATELY synced to both iCloud and my Mac. Problem solved!

We all seem to be in this together. I noticed some Notes performance issues before iOS 11 was first announced, but not to degree of Notes issues with 11 and the 11 updates thereafter.

The issue must be Notes and iCloud, a few days back I shut my Notes data off and my Notes issues were resolved, but only for a short time (hours), which leads me to believe the issue was iCloud. Then all my Notes issues were resurrected again last week, even with data off. 11.1 was just released, and my Notes is now almost 100% unusable, with or without data.

I was fortunate to have copied and pasted one of my most important Notes files to Evernote recently and have been using Evernote over the past week, my Evernote solution isn't as effective as my Notes environment, so I hope Apple is working on a Notes fix very soon, but I haven’t heard that are or they are even acknowledging that they have a Notes issue.

I’m not surprised that your resets didnt work, I tried that too and even upgraded a perfectly fine iPhone 7 Plus 256gb to a new iPhone 8 Plus 256 gb to fix this Notes isue and that didn’t work either, its not us or our devices... the resolution is with Apple and Apple alone. They need to resolve this.

I just keep hoping that one of the future 11 updates will be a Notes saviour.

Hi Everyone...

I've been on the phone with Applecare the last 24 hours talking about these issues. I just upgraded my iMac and MacBook Pro to the latest High Sierra version... My iOS devices recognized this with update saying some time of file update or something. Anyways, to see if Notes was working, I just cut and pasted a very large note from Evernote to Apple Notes then tried doing some edits and modifications, and significant edits and pastes and Notes hasn't shut down, no screen freezes etc. Give it a try, too early to say, but worth a try. Let me know if this is working on your end?

I also have had problems with Notes and iOS 11.

I, too, have over 4,000 notes synced with iCloud, half of which I imported over from Evernote this year. I’m hoping it is an iCloud or iOS issue and not an Evernote artifact causing the issues.

I have tried everything short of restoring my iPhone 7 - and then my iPad Pro started having the same issues with Notes on iOS 11.

I am now syncing Gmail notes with the iOS Notes app. Gmail notes don’t afford all the new iOS Notes features - but notes don’t crash and the Notes also sync across my iDevices.

This is the best band-aid I could apply for now.

PLEASE fix this issue soon as I went all in with iOS Notes and can’t go back!!!

I believe we are all in a wait and hold with Apple for a Notes fix. I’ve been troubleshooting this since 11 was first released. I’ve talked to Apple numerous times about this issue with Notes and I believe the Notes issues are related to both iCloud and iOS 11, and all the updates thereafter. iCloud also appears to be in some sort of evolution since 11 was announced, so troubleshooting this has been a moving target. We have no choice but to wait. The Notes issues have gradually become worse since 11 was announced to the point where my iOS Notes is now unusable. I have a support incident escalated with Apple. I transferred my critical notes to ky Evernote for now, its not perfect but will do until Apple fixes iOS Notes.

My iOS Notes has been essentially unusable for a couple weeks now, in a holding pattern waiting for Apple to resolve it some day. As a temporary fix, when I need an Apple iOS Note, I go to my desktop OSX Notes, copy and paste it from Apple Notes to my OSX Evernote application, Evernote then synchronizes to my iOS Evernote, not perfect but its been wirking whike we wait gor Apple to finally resilve this issue.

Philip, I too have the same Apple tech that you do. I too upgraded a perfectly fine new iPhone 7 Plus 256gb to an 8 Plus 256 gb with the gaith in Apple that a new phone would fix the notes issue and the Notes issues continued. I too have 256 gb iPad Pro... same issues. I started this discussion thread many months ago and others have upgraded to new Apple tech in the hopes that the “next” version of iOS 11 would solve our issues... these new updates have never solved our Notes issues. I have since replaced Notes with a hybrid of Evernote and Microsoft One Note, with the plan to end up with One Note. I would have preferred to stay with Apple Notes, but it has been rendered useless on mobile with the introduction of iOS 11. Apple has essentially abandoned our calls for help and assistance, offering basic or ineffective solutions. This discussion thread provides other details of alternatives, hopefully those details are of use to you.

Sorry to hear of your Notes issues, you are not alone. This issue is absolutely “not solved”. I believe that a contributor in this community thread marked it solved before a solution was stable, which in my opinion “all solutions listed” are not stable, they all freeze, reboot or have issues over time. The contributors to this thread are in the same position you are, Notes has become the unusable since the introduction of iOS 11. And we don’t work for Apple, just disappointed Apple Notes users like yourself, just trying to help one another, because Apple is NOT helping us. Initially this thread was posted in the hopes that Apple would have “meaningful” contributions or solutions... that never really happened. Early in this thread, the thread contributors then starting troubleshooting together as a community, offering many different potential solutions, which at the time appeared promising but never resolved the Notes issues with iOS11. As time passed, the thread discussions mostly focused on transitions from Apple to other note taking alternatives. Many of us have escalated to Apple Support with no resolution or meaningful assistance or resolution. If you have escalated to Apple, please let us know your experience. Based on other blog posts about Apple iOS issues, a major iOS development is under way (iOS 12?), that is focusing on iOS stability rather than introducing new features.

Hi David - You are right. The ipad seems fine. After 3 hours...the iphone notes started crashing again. Very sad, it was such a light app, flawless in the past. I have removed 95% of the notes to my mac notes, left key ones i always reference on icloud. It is working fine with only 57 notes there now (at least i can use with apple pencil and to add new notes for now) - fingers crossed for 11.3.

Before deciding to dump your investment in Apple technology, I’d encourage your peruse this thread for Notes alternatives many of us have adopted.

I, for instance, use MS OneNote for personal and professional notes on all my devices. It even has Pencil support on the iPad Pro. I’d say it is on par if not more professional than Apple Notes.

Bear is another emerging note app. I had been using it for many things prior to going all in on OneNote.

As with many others, EverNote has been disappointing me because of their changing subscription model the past couple years. Multi device support should be a feature at all levels, not a limitation - I’m sure I’m not the only one who might be using 4-5 Apple devices at any point in the day.

And did I mention that MS OneNote has an Apple Watch app. Used it for a call I took when on my morning bike ride without my iPhone.

Apple has always been about “it just works”. And mostly that’s been true. I will readopt the iOS Notes app once it does work again but for now “OneNote just works”.

I’m sure an alternative will work for you without dumping all the other Apple tech benefits.

My two cents …
