Apple Notes keeps crashing in iOS11

Hope you can help me, I appreciate your input and suggestions. FYI... I usually upgrade my iPhone every two years and upgrade to the most advanced Apple device that Apple offers. I’ve been using my current iPhone 7+ 256gb for almost a year now, with no issues. I have been using Apple Notes for many years with no issues prior to my recent upgrade to iOS11. I just upgraded to iOS 11 the day of the release and have now noticed that Notes is always crashing. I do use Notes quite extensively. After a couple a crashes, I think tried exiting Notes, it often resets itself and then crashes again. I have tried both hard and soft re-boots, but that doesn’t help... Any ideas? Thanks in advance... Rob

My problem seems to be solved. I went back and compared my most recent notes on the iPhone against the same notes in iCloud. Found about 15 that were out of sync (the iPhone version was correct since that is where I edit most of them, thus confirming what I knew before: that my sync problem was originating on the iPhone). I then copied each of the notes that were out of sync emailed them to myself, and copied and pasted them into my Mac notes app. They all synced fine through iCloud and onto my iPhone. I then went back a year to verify there were no problems with other notes. All other notes were in sync. I then turned note off on my iPhone, this deleting them from the device. I lastly turned Notes on in my iPhone. All downloaded from iCloud to my iPhone. I tested the sync process by creating a new note on my iPhone. It IMMEDIATELY synced to both iCloud and my Mac. Problem solved!

I also have the same issue since the very beginning of iOS 11 upgrade, which no subsequent upgrades have fixed. All my notes were saved on the iPhone, not iCloud, so I am now not only disabled to use such a usefull everyday app, but also I have lost access to the data it contained. I tried all possible ways of troubleshooting: soft/hard rebooting/resetting from backup the iPhone, resetting only settings on iPhone, removing&reinstalling the app. Notes crashes while opening, it freezes Settings app when trying to access its settings from it, no sharing to it is possible, it freezes the source app when trying to do so, etc. It only worked once when I reset iPhone as new device, ignoring my backup and losing all my data. If Apple does not fix it, this will remain the only way forward, hoping that I somehow extract notes from my backup with 3rd party tools. But even than I’ll lose the data in the password-locked notes. I wonder how many people must complain before Apple realises the magnitude of the issue and fixes it.

This is obviously still an issue, is there any update you can give us, will this be correct in 11.1? It seems like most users here that are having this issue are heavy users, like the app is crashing on trying to sync that many notes (I didn't have this issue when I had only a few hundred notes, but at 4,000 it's unusable)? I really really really don't want to go back to EN but I basically don't have a useable notes app on my iPhone?

We all seem to be in this together. I noticed some Notes performance issues before iOS 11 was first announced, but not to degree of Notes issues with 11 and the 11 updates thereafter.

The issue must be Notes and iCloud, a few days back I shut my Notes data off and my Notes issues were resolved, but only for a short time (hours), which leads me to believe the issue was iCloud. Then all my Notes issues were resurrected again last week, even with data off. 11.1 was just released, and my Notes is now almost 100% unusable, with or without data.

I was fortunate to have copied and pasted one of my most important Notes files to Evernote recently and have been using Evernote over the past week, my Evernote solution isn't as effective as my Notes environment, so I hope Apple is working on a Notes fix very soon, but I haven’t heard that are or they are even acknowledging that they have a Notes issue.

I’m not surprised that your resets didnt work, I tried that too and even upgraded a perfectly fine iPhone 7 Plus 256gb to a new iPhone 8 Plus 256 gb to fix this Notes isue and that didn’t work either, its not us or our devices... the resolution is with Apple and Apple alone. They need to resolve this.

I just keep hoping that one of the future 11 updates will be a Notes saviour.

I’m on an iPhone 8+ 256, iOS 11.2.5. I use Apple Notes extensively on both an iPad Pro 10.5 (256, iOS 11.2.5), and the iPhone, for personal & professional use. I noticed since updating to iOS 11, the Notes app started to be sluggish & slow when writing w/ the Apple Pencil, and when reviewing notes on the iPhone (a 7+ at the time), the app was extremely slow. I attributed it to the iPhone 7 and the new OS. Now I have upgraded to an 8+ and even w/ the prior OS (11.x.x up), I noticed that the Notes app would be sluggish and unresponsive when reviewing notes on the iPhone. I thought that upgrading to 11.2.5 w/ it’s bug fixes that * maybe * Apple would have snuck in a fix for Notes. I was sorely disappointed to learn that not only are the bugs still there, it’s worse. Now, on the iPhone, the Notes app crashes constantly and doesn’t even allow inputs. When it does, I will type a note, or insert text into a table & the app will crash, deleting what I just wrote. It’s completely unreliable. This is only on the iPhone. The iPad Pro is better than it was on iOS 11 GM, but it too is still sluggish at times and the Pencil inputs are * extremely * delayed at times (I have to tap the screen w/ the Pencil and the inputs will appear a few seconds later. After this aggressive action, it will be fine for an hour or so, but it will return at some point later while I’m taking notes). I think it may have to do w/ syncing or uploading to iCloud, but I can’t be sure. I have over 500 Notes (some over 4 years old), and as I said, I use it extensively for my job. I don’t want to have to migrate to another app, but it seems if I can’t rely on Apple Notes, that’s going to have to be the case.

UPDATE:

Notes now appears to be loading notes to my iPhone X and iPad Pro, both running iOS 11.3.

At first, nothing was loading to either device. I then tried a few things, one of which may have “kickstarted” the loading:

1) iCloud via Web browser - Per davidfromhollady above, I went to iCloud via my web browser to check what notes were in Notes. I had already done this via my Mac Notes client which showed all my notes were still there. Interestingly, it seemed that iCloud was “hung” or down for a bit this morning as I couldn’t log into iCloud via my browser for about 30 minutes, give or take.

2) Add new note on iDevice - I also added a new note in the Notes apps on both my iPhone X and iPad Pro. I’m not sure if this kickstated things itself, worked in conjuntion with logging into iCloud via my web browser or it did nothing. But my notes are now loaded on both devices.

3) Turn off Notes & iDevice - as per ”The IT Crowd”’s episodic advice, I also decided to turn the iDevices off & on after also turning Notes off on each device. I am not sure if this caused a reset, but 30 years in IT have taught me that when all else fails . . . Again, not sure if this worked in conjunction with steps 1 &/or 2 or did nothing at all. That said, notes are now loaded.

I will give it another 24 hours and will post another update if I have a problem. I am optimistic, though, that the iCloud sync issue with Notes is resolved with the iOS 11.3 update.

As Robert.Burns notes, it is very much appreciated to have an Apple community of experts help validate our mutual sanity. Even though Apple may have a problem, bug or other app issue from time to time, knowing that you aren’t crazy - or perhaps are mutually crazy with other Apple gurus - is a great comfort to one’s sanity!

Thanks for the support!
