Apple Notes keeps crashing in iOS11

Hope you can help me, I appreciate your input and suggestions. FYI... I usually upgrade my iPhone every two years and upgrade to the most advanced Apple device that Apple offers. I’ve been using my current iPhone 7+ 256gb for almost a year now, with no issues. I have been using Apple Notes for many years with no issues prior to my recent upgrade to iOS11. I just upgraded to iOS 11 the day of the release and have now noticed that Notes is always crashing. I do use Notes quite extensively. After a couple a crashes, I think tried exiting Notes, it often resets itself and then crashes again. I have tried both hard and soft re-boots, but that doesn’t help... Any ideas? Thanks in advance... Rob

My problem seems to be solved. I went back and compared my most recent notes on the iPhone against the same notes in iCloud. Found about 15 that were out of sync (the iPhone version was correct since that is where I edit most of them, thus confirming what I knew before: that my sync problem was originating on the iPhone). I then copied each of the notes that were out of sync emailed them to myself, and copied and pasted them into my Mac notes app. They all synced fine through iCloud and onto my iPhone. I then went back a year to verify there were no problems with other notes. All other notes were in sync. I then turned note off on my iPhone, this deleting them from the device. I lastly turned Notes on in my iPhone. All downloaded from iCloud to my iPhone. I tested the sync process by creating a new note on my iPhone. It IMMEDIATELY synced to both iCloud and my Mac. Problem solved!

I finally have this problem solved. I turned off iCloud sync for notes. Deleted the Notes app from my iPhone. Rebooted. Reinstalled Notes app. Turned on iCloud sync.

I have over 1000 notes so it took a bit of time for all the notes to appear.

At first it worked well. No crashes or freezes. But I could not search. I did another hard reboot. Still search was not working well. But after 2 days search is now working perfectly and still no crashes or freezes. I allthink iOS needed to reindex after the Notes reinstall. Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I had massive issues with Notes app crashing on ios 11 - with all note stored on iCloud. It made the app unusable. And I am a heavy user with more than 5000 notes. I have been depressed for 3 months because of this!

There are many resources that try to help u fix the issue, such as (they all say the same thing):

https://www.indabaa.com/apple-notes-app-crashing-on-iphone-ipad/

NOTHING worked for me.

I have finally fixed the issue. Notes is now stable in ios 11 and the search function is fully usable.

You need a desktop version of notes + fast internet (if you have synced a lot of notes and attachments)

Firstly On your iphone / ipads:

1. Simply go to your iCloud Settings to view all the apps that are synced to your iCloud account.

2. From here, you need to disable the option for Notes.

3. As you will disable the Notes feature, you will get a prompt like this.

4. Tap on the “Delete from iPhone” option to confirm your choice.

5. Restart your device

Then on your desktop:

1) Open the app.

2) Click on icloud folder where all your notes are.

3) Control A: select all the notes in that folder

4) Right click your mouse - click Move to>On my Mac>Notes

All your notes will be moved from iCloud to your computer - Pls note that the Notes Desktop app froze (spinning ball) - DO NOT TRY TO QUIT AND RESTART. Just leave it. it is working to copy all note from iCloud to the computer.

If you are on slow lines leave overnight - should be done in the morning.

Then:

2) Click on Notes folder "on my Mac' where all your notes are.

3) Control A: select all the notes in that folder

4) Right click your mouse - click Move to>iCloud>Notes

As above - leave overnight. All your notes will be copied back to icloud.

Then turn on notes in icloud settings on all your mobile devices....

Smooth sailing....I am a happy puppy.

I had the same issues and have found a fix that worked for me. My iCloud account was signed in on an old computer that I did not use anymore. I signed out. Next, I disabled icloud on my iPad and my iPhone. I did not save a copy of the data on either device. I reset both devices. I then enabled iCloud on my phone and waited until all the data was back. I then did this with my iPad. It appears the problem I was having was with conflicting icloud data. I did this one week ago and have not had a problem since. Hope it works for you!

Possible solution. I've been having this solution since the iOS 11 beta days and it's not getting better. I just turned off the siri search and suggestions for just notes but kept the option on so I can still see the notes app pop up in the search area. The Notes app runs a lot better with the siri search off. I think one of the problems is the device keeps trying to index everything and there isn't enough time because we keep opening and closing the notes. I have well over 4,000 notes but it doesn't seem to be limited to the quantity. I'm also curious if having locked notes is a factor since most of my problems got worse when I added more locked notes.

So far this is working for me. I had a lot less crashed but overall working better.

Notes has been stable for me for 3 weeks. I have 836 notes, all icloud. macOS 10.13.2 and iOS 11.2.1 - about to update to 11.2.2. Notes was mostly unusable for months for all the reasons everyone else has cited. I only got it to work by turning off iCloud for Notes thus deleting all the data from my iPhone, deleting the Notes app on my iPhone, and reinstalling Notes from the App Store, and re-syncing everything. I rebooted the iPhone between every step just because.

My Notes started crashing when I put a table(like the excel table of MS) in my note. When I'm about to reset my phone for solution I accidentally used the 3D touch for notes and try to create a new note. That's when it opened. I tried to open the notes with table and crashed again. I opened a new note using 3D touch and works again. Then i deleted the notes with table and then my Notes starts to work normally.

Hope this helps. 🙂

I did find a “solution” that wasn’t difficult. I spoke with Apple chat and they recommended the following:

1) turn off icloud for notes in settings. (I had it uploading to icloud and had confirmed my Mac also had my notes on them.

2) delete notes app and state to delete the notes off my phone.

3) I turned my phone off and on just for kicks.

4) re downloaded notes app from App Store

5) turned icloud back on for notes

6) access notes. It worked.

I did reiterate to the chat person that previous people on the Apple.com site complaining of this had upgrades to iPhone 8 and it hadn’t fixed it. So at this point I’m glad I’m back in. I’m not sure if I go back in and do the same thing I did before if it will happen. But at least this isn’t a wipe off your phone and reinstall the whole shebang thing.

I found a solution for my issue. My notes would crash when I tried to scroll through certain ones I used everyday. I started having this problem when I tried to add new stock symbols “FVCL” so I could research them when I got home. The app crashed after I copied text from WhatsApp and tried to paste it into notes. I then tried to paste the text into another note but it too crashed. To fix my issue, I went back to the notes that were crashing and copied all the text in that note, then I pasted it into IMessage and deleted the blank section at the end of the text. Then I copied and pasted it over the original text in note. I did this for every note that would crash when I tried to scroll through.
