Apple TV 4K Switching input to AirPlay on Received when Netflix or iTunes Movie Starts Playing

Products used: Denon AVR-X2000, Samsung 65JS8500, Apple TV 4K, TiVo Roamio Pro, Harmony Elite Remote

I just swapped out my Apple TV 4 with an Apple TV 4K and I'm experiencing a really strange problem.

I can access the Apple TV with no issues, install apps, adjust settings and more. When I press play to start the movie on Netflix or via iTunes store, my Denon's input changes to AirPlay and won't go back. So far doing a full restart of everything gets me in and I am able to play the movie without issue.

I don't see how this can be a HDMI-CEC issue, as the Apple TV 4K works properly when selected (it's only when the movie starts playing does this happen), plus I have that function turned off in the receiver and TV. I do have all my devices connected to the Denon and then a single HDMI cable out to the TV and all are connected via Ethernet, not WiFi.

Any thoughts?

Diana is correct. I set my audio out to receiver and it goes to airplay Anytime a movie is played. The sound is great but no pic. Go back to Apple TV input and I have a pic but no sound. Not sure why this setting is even in here. I would rather let my receiver handle all audio, it will do a much better job then Apple. By resetting your system, it defaulted back to Apple TV audio which fixed the issue. I can’t find an answer to this problem so I am going to ask Apple direct how to make the receiver handle audio, which is what this option does, but make it keep the picture as well.

The issue is that the TV is now being the audio controller .. ergo, volume up and down are now through the TV, though the receiver is actually processing the audio ... essentially, you can no longer do volume up or down through the receiver when this issue happens and or when you chose .. Apple TV as the audio output.. because of this issue (and I am sure the OP had the same) is that I now have to manually go to the receiver and manually turn up the volume via the knobs ... no longer through the remote... I want volume control (up / down) to be the receiver ... NOT the TV

I had this problem too with my Yahama RX-V681, and it was maddening. Since the Apple TV provided my receiver as an option for the sound, it seemed like the right thing to choose since that's what I want to handle the sound output.

After considering the symptoms and the solution I think I have a better understanding of why this was happening and why the Apple TV would have this setting. I think it would be better labeled as "AirPlay Audio Output". The believe the dropdown displays all available AirPlay targets. I think this would be used in the case that you have the HDMI connected to your TV, but want the audio to be routed elsewhere that's not connected to the TV. (Like say if you had a pair of HomePods.) In the case of the HDMI-connected receiver that also listens for AirPlay, the behavior is quite unfortunate since the AirPlay connection is given priority and the input on the receiver switches from the HDMI audio/video from the Apple TV to the audio-only AirPlay data being sent from the Apple TV.
