How can I open my pre-6.3 documents on Pages without being asked if I want to save it as a 'single' or 'package'?

Since I've updated to Pages 6.3, each time I open one of my old pages document I get this message.

User uploaded file

Regardless of which of the two latter options I choose I get the same result ie. Pages closes and I get an errorUser uploaded file

If I click OK Pages closes and if I click Reopen I get the same screen again.

I still believe that you have run software on your Mac that has aggressively stomped on valid applications, or removed parts of them.

Mac Cleaner may still remain part of the problem, even though you believe that you have removed it with another "cleaner" application that you call DetectX. You should avoid all so-called "cleaner" applications as they have caused no end of problems for Mac users over time.

At this point, you might consider reinstalling Pages v6.3 from the App Store. I normally do not recommend this, but if it is damaged, then do so.

Another tool that we recommend, and is written by a frequent contributor to the support communities, is Etrecheck. Preserving your privacy information, it will produce a detailed report (which you can post back here) of what is installed on your machine, including any detected Malware, and the option to remove it. It will also detect if you really cleaned out Mac Keeper, or just parts of it.

If you did not obtain Adobe Flash directly from the real Adobe Flash download site, then that may also be a source of malware, but usually would have no bearing on fixing the Pages v6.3 issue that you report.

If your file is less than 1GB, try starting collaboration on it either in the Finder with Share > Add People then choose "Anyone with the link" and Copy Link, or on iOS or the Web. Once it's in collaboration mode, you'll be able to open it with Pages 6.3 on the Mac. Then make an edit and stop sharing the document by clicking on the Collaborate toolbar button > Sharing Options > Stop Sharing. If you save after that and get the Single File / Package sheet, the app shouldn't crash. You can go directly to the File Menu > Advanced > Change File Type and choose a file type to avoid getting the drop down sheet.

I cannot reproduce your issues with Pages v6.3 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6. If I also open an RTFD package in Pages v6.3, it will save as a single-file format Pages document without any dialog challenge.

When you state old Pages documents, were these created by Pages '06, '08, or '09 — or a more recent version of Pages? Are they already in package format? In Finder, right-click on the document. Does it offer to show package contents on the secondary menu?

I have opened single-file format, and package folder versions of Pages '08, '09, v5.1, v5.2, v5.5.3, v6.1, and v6.2 documents, and when saving (Save As...), Pages v6.3 just does it without dialog. All releases of Pages since v5.5.3 have automatically opened and saved earlier Pages documents in their original {single-file, package} format — even after converting older formats to new. The default save format for new documents is single-file format.

Quit Pages v6.3 from its Application menu. Press and hold the shift key while launching Pages again. Now, attempt to open that same document as before that caused the previous dialogs. Any change?

If the previous paragraph did not solve the problem, then shutdown the Mac, and boot into Safe Boot mode. Repeat the preceding paragraph test. Any change? Reboot normally, and again, repeat the preceding paragraph test. Any change?

So far, only two people have reported this issue in the Pages for Mac Support Community. If there were a pernicious bug in Pages v6.3, then far more posts would appear here, and I would have no problem reproducing it. However, I can't reproduce it on either Sierra 10.12.6, or the update to High Sierra 10.13. This does not suggest that that Pages v6.3 is bug-free...

The OP continues to have a known piece of crap/malware (Mac Keeper) that remains installed, despite attempting to remove it with another so-called cleaner application. It is not impossible for so-called “cleaner” applications to wrongly remove parts of applications, or anti-virus applications to do the same thing on false positives. This is why we advise users to avoid these classes of products, which routinely interfere with normal system functionality.

The OP has not replied to my suggestion to reinstall Pages v6.3 in case it has been damaged by these cleaner applications.

Sep 24, 2017 12:28 PM in response to Nelldel

RTFD is a rich text format directory that contains a rich text format (RTF) document, and images.

Posting a Pages crash dump here is usually not worthwhile.

What did you install, run, or restore just before these Pages v6.3 issues began? So-called “Mac cleaner,” and unnecessary anti-virus products can potentially damage existing applications, or prevent their normal operation. Remove these cleaners and anti-virus products per vendors removal instructions.

With Pages quit, If your home directory has a Library folder visible, double-click on it, and locate the Caches folder in it. Double-click on that Caches folder. Locate the com.apple.iWork.Pages item, and drag it to the Trash. It may be corrupted, and the source of your Pages v6.3 issues.

The hosts have removed your previous duplicate post.

Your best source of help will be here in the Pages for Mac support community, as the problem is with Pages v6.3.

You might download the free Malwarebytes for home (mac) anti-malware application, and run that. It will report any malware, and offer to remove it. You do not have to purchase an annual subscription, and when the trial runs out, it will just work anyway. I use it, as do a great many others.

You never acknowledged whether you have so-called Mac Cleaners, or anti-virus software installed. ???

Thank you for your response. I also work on macOS Sierra 10.12.6. I’m not sure what RTFD stands for I’m afraid

The documents were created on ipads. I work with young children and keep individual files on each child, which we update daily. Each staff member has an ipad and when a file is updated on one ipad it automatically updates on both the imac and on other ipads. Ocassionally if two staff comment on the same child within a few minutes of each other, we end with duplicate files. The best way to merge is open both together on imac and copy and paste. I’ve been working this system for two years without problems. The Ipad Pages version is 3.2 and is updated according as updates are suggested.

Today is the first time I’ve had a problem, as outlined in previous message.

I’ve tried the 'Quit Pages' suggestion and there is no change. I’ve also tried the ‘Safe Boot’ option and the same thing happens.

ps. The problem presents when I open some files but not others. It presents when I open files that are not duplicated also. Here is the report I get.

Address the red ink reporting from Etrecheck.

Your first order of business is to free up storage in your User account, as at 28 GB free, you will soon be receiving warnings from the operating system, and left unresolved, the operating system will eventually reach a point where it won't work.

A corrupt /etc/hosts file is not a good thing.

I would get rid of: HWPortDetect_driver: Path: /Library/StartupItems/HWPortDetect_driver

Click on the Desktop, and then press shift+command+G. Copy and paste the above red-ink /Library path, and go to that location. Drag it to the Trash after you provide your login password.

I am surprised that Malware bytes, or Etrecheck did not catch Mac Keeper, as you can see, four of its kernel extensions (.kext) remain installed.

Microsoft has this bulletin that you should read before considering an upgrade to High Sierra.

Sep 25, 2017 6:21 PM in response to Live-n-Learn

It is not "clear" at all that there is a bug.

Obviously there is a problem on your Mac and the original poster's but Nelldel is running that awful piece of shyte, MacKeeper, a hint that they may have done other things they should not have on their computer.

Try and narrow down what is different about your installation. We don't know because we can't see your computer and you have basically told us nothing other than you have the problem.
