Do Not Disturb Keeps Turning Itself On

Ever since I have updated my phone to iOS 11, Do Not Disturb keeps randomly turning itself on for my iPhone 7 (and as a result on my Apple Watch, too). At first I thought maybe it was because DND While Driving was set to Bluetooth and that when my phone was connecting to Bluetooth devices in my home it would mistakingly think I was in a car. However, I have since turned DND While Driving to Manual and the issue persists. I've also checked the DND schedule that I have set (and have had set for as long as that feature was added to iOS) and nothing has changed there. To make sure that wasn't the issue, I turned it off all together and the issue persists at random multiple times throughout the day (which is a major problem for me since I'm a Realtor and am missing calls). Anyone else having this issue, or have any ideas how to address this?

Same thing happening on my iPhone 7 Plus. Tried enabling and disabling several settings, such as: Do Not Disturb, Scheduled, and Do Not Disturb while driving. So frustrating. In fact, it just turned on again.

Same problem here. I don't own an apple watch and don't have an apple watch app on my phone. I don't use the bedtime function and have never set it up. Ever since the update my phone has been randomly turning on the do not disturb which is causing all kinds of problems since I am traveling. I really hate how there is always a big issue with these phones immediately after an update. What a hassle.

If it will help, here are my DND settings:

DND OFF

Scheduled OFF

Silence Always

Allow Calls From No One

Repeated Calls ON

DND While Driving Activate Manually

Also, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls and REMOVE DND While Driving from the Control Panel (mostly to prevent inadvertent activation)

Finally, if your car does NOT have Bluetooth, try DND While Driving Activate When Connected to Car Bluetooth.

I have a variation on this problem. Do not Disturb activates on my Apple Watch even when it is NOT activated on my iPhone (running iOS 11.1.2). I have tried all the debugging steps possible. No luck. Anyone know if this is a known bug? I am going to submit a feedback request to Apple on the Developer's site and see if I can get a response. I have run afoul of my girlfriend (a.k.a. WIFE!) b/c of this nasty behavior of the Watch as I don't get her messages. I have a cellular-enabled Apple Watch 3.

P.S. I have considered the explanation that I am somehow swiping up on my Watch screen, exposing the Do not Disturb icon, and accidentally activating the feature. Then swiping down to hide all evidence of the dastardly act. I would bet my first born male child this is not what is happening. Having said that, I have only spawned female children. But, I hope you get my point.

Hi Robbieharris yes the same thing has been happening to me and it’s really awful! I have tried everything that you have tried and there’s got to be a major bug that they need to fix. So I’m sorry it’s bothering you but at least I know it’s just not something I am dealing with and Apple needs to get going with this hopefully soon thanks a lot hope it gets resolved quickly

My iPhone 6 keeps turning on Do Not Disturb. I've never used the feature, nor did I know about it until my phone stopped receiving communications. Since the moon icon is so thin and small, and my iPhone otherwise worked, I didn't notice it for days. Missed a lot of communications.

Hi paulborneo,

There is a similar discussionn on this topic in another Community forum. I posted the following there and have reproduced it for you here. It solved the DND problem for me and others. Give it a try.

P.S. The procedure is different if you do not have an Apple Watch. Let me know if that is your situation. If so, I'll post the procedure for just the iPhone.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

1. Turn off Do Not Disturb on iPhone.

2. Turn off "Mirror iPhone" setting in Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

3. HARD restart your iPhone. (Simultaneously hold down power and home buttons. Wait till screen goes black. Keep holding those two buttons. When Apple Logo appears let go of buttons and wait for iPhone restart. BTW, the procedure is different for iPhone X.)

4. HARD restart your Apple Watch. (Simultaneously hold down both side buttons until Watch screen goes black and then Apple Logo appears. Let go of buttons. Wait for the Apple Watch to restart.)

5. Turn on Do Not Disturb on your iPhone. Set DND to an innocuous time interval, such as 3:00 - 3:15 AM.

6. Turn on "Mirror iPhone" setting in Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

If that solves the problem, go ahead and try turning off Do Not Disturb completely or turn it on for a time interval you really want. For those folks who had DND initially activated, don't set DND to your original time interval. Change things up by 5 minutes or so for the beginning and ending times.

If you think of it, report back to the community if this procedure worked or not.

Regards, Luigi

Hi Tsuma,

Try these directions if you do not have an Apple Watch.

1. Turn off Do Not Disturb on your iPhone. If it’s already off, that's one small step for man or woman already completed!

2. HARD restart your iPhone. (Simultaneously hold down power and home buttons. Wait till screen goes black. Keep holding those two buttons. When Apple Logo appears let go of buttons and wait for iPhone restart. The procedure is different for iPhone X.)

3. Turn ON Do Not Disturb on your iPhone. Set the scheduled on and off times for Do Not Disturb to a very small interval that has very little chance of being problematic...say 3:00-3:15am?

4. See if this works. If it does, then you could try turning off DND completely.

If this does or does not work, would you please let the community know. This would help others navigate similar troubled waters.

I never have DND turned on, and I haved DND while driving set to MANUAL on my iPhone 8+. I use a Garmin satnav. I have systematically upgraded to the latest iOS releases. However nothing changes my problem that while driving the notifications of iMessages that used to appear on my iPhone 6, and were repeated on the satnav screen, do not appear, and the iMessage tone is silenced. This is so frustrating. I never wanted nor needed this “DND while driving” feature, and now not being alerted to potentially important messages while on long highway journeys is really annoying. I have never texted while driving, but only if I am alerted to a message can I make a handsfree call or stop at a service area to read it fully.
