I just installed iOS 11 on my iPhone 6 and noticed that the left/right arrow keys are missing on the keyboard in horizontal mode. With previous OS's the arrow keys were present. Very useful. Would be a shame to lose them. Any way to get them back?

Just noticed on phones with 3D Touch, I can press in the blank area of the keyboard and it turns into a 'mouse' that allows me to move the cursor anyplace on the screen.
It's not just you. I don't want to go back to the previous iOS version, but I sure thought about it. I've also started thinking about dumping the iPhone and going with an Android, as they have had custom keyboards for years. Meanwhile I've started searching for a custom iOS keyboard that provides the missing feature, but so far haven't identified one. I really don't want to deal with the extra baggage (i.e. microphone is disabled for one) associated with using a custom keyboard. Certainly there is no shortage of screen real estate to support the arrow keys on an iPhone 6 or larger. So simple and so useful for people that like to type. Apple really needs to add the arrow keys.
For me it is much worse that that. Without these buttons it is impossible to edit your typing in any meaningful way. AS is often the case with upgrades I could see nothing of value but this big negative so I have gone back to the previous version. 5 hours of effort!
Also
1) nowhere do they tell you they have deleted these buttons
2) I talked with Apple support and they were unable to edit the text with the buttons removed or show me how to do it
3) It is not as if the space is used for anything else
4) Even then the keyboard depends on the programme you are using so you don't even have a consistent keyboard.
I just find the whole thing abysmal -- then maybe it is just me...
That’s not a good workaround!, It takes several extra steps to accomplish with them left and right arrows used to accomplish very easily. Coupled with the fact that sometimes the screen sensitivity when you’re trying to select specific place in a sentence or word or space in between is not very accurate it’s tedious that’s why people like the arrows

FYI, to edit words using the default keyboard: tap and hold on the word that you wan to edit, until a magnifying circle appears. Then you can move the cursor in that word by sliding left/right. When the cursor is where you want it, lift your finger and type or delete.
SwiftKey is also a good alternative keyboard.
