Upgrade to High Sierra from Lion (10.7.5)

I'm trying to upgrade to MacOS High Sierra.

I'm running Lion (10.7.5) on a late-2011 MacBook Pro.

When I try to upgrade from the App store, I get the error:

--> This update requires macOS version 10.8 or later.

However, I can't figure out how to upgrade my computer to a newer version (i.e. 10.8 or later).

How can you get around this?

You'll have to install El Capitan as an intermediate step. Refer to the bottom of this article: How to download macOS High Sierra - Apple Support
