I'm trying to upgrade to MacOS High Sierra.
I'm running Lion (10.7.5) on a late-2011 MacBook Pro.
When I try to upgrade from the App store, I get the error:
--> This update requires macOS version 10.8 or later.
However, I can't figure out how to upgrade my computer to a newer version (i.e. 10.8 or later).
How can you get around this?

Download/buy Mountain Lion 10.8 from Apple (i.e. Apple website, and not the App store)
Backup your files, and make a fresh install of Mountain Lion using an external flash drive (many tutorials online).
Download High Sierra from the App store.
Make a fresh install of High Sierra using a (second) external flash drive.

If one looks in the App Store, the minimum operating system required is 10.8 for a macOS Sierra installation.
When I try that, I get another error:
--> This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer.
