Airprint not working after ios11 update

Hi all.

I have a Brother printer connected via USB to a Windows computer. I used Airprint Activator and the Bonjour printer wizard. The printer of course supports wireless and is connected to the same WiFi network my phone is on. For nearly two years I have had no issue printing from my iPhone 6 Plus. It would find the printer, I typed in the user name and all as well.

Even during this time however a box would pop up on my iPhone stating something to the effect that the name wasn't secure and if it was expected to hit continue. I would and it would print no issues.

Now after the ios11 update, I cannot print. It finds the printer, yet when I hit print a box pops up stating "Security of connection could not be verified."

I have searched and read and cannot find anything about this. There is no firewall so I would not think the ports would be the issue. Guest account was not enabled before and it worked fine, however I have enabled it now. Still no luck.

I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 11

You actually never used Apple's branded airprint, you seems to have been using a program that allows to configure computer connection to printer "airprint activator". You have two options - 1. if your printer supports airprint - configure it. 2. If your printer does not - contact that particular program support to see if they can help you.

The simple fact is that the Windows Airprint Installer 1.3 version of AirPrint will not work with IOS 11 on iPhone unless the Microsoft Windows guest account is turned on, and has no password. Anyone who claims to have overcome this problem with some combination of special Windows user and/or password protection has accidentally left their guest account on. The reason appears to be that IOS 11 can not overcome the security challenge presented by Windows AirPrint Installer. Naturally, running Microsoft Windows with an unprotected active guest account is a major security hazard, but if you're just a home user who occasionally wants to print from an iPhone, it's easy enough to write a little batch file to turn on or off the guest account with password temporarily, just when you need it.

I am having the same issue with our ios11 phones while ios10 continues to works fine.

I did packet captures for the working ios10 case and the not working ios11 case. The error happens when ios11 attempts to enable security (TLS). The windows airprint driver appears to support security but it must be configured with a certificate. I’m not sure how to do this.

It appears that for iOS11, a secure connection for AirPrint is mandatory but for ios10 it is not. Ios10 will warn you that the connection is not secure but will let you choose continue to print anyways. I

Actually, this program works. The steps I took are:

  1. turn off the service
  2. use command line as Administrator to ensure "AirPrint" user has a blank password:
    1. C\>net user AirPrint *
    2. Type a password for the user: press Enter to leave it blank
    3. Retype the password to confirm: press Enter to leave it blank
  3. Use the AirPrint Installer 1.3 (pictured by @solosheep)
    1. select AirPrint user for "AirPrint Auth".
    2. ensure allow blank password is checked
  4. turn the service back on

On the iOS side, you'll now see the printer does not have a lock beside it anymore and works again.

I have the same issue. This has happened every time iOS is updated on my iPad Air. I am running Airprint for Windows on Windows 10 Pro. It has worked for years. This time after the upgrade to iOS 11.0.3 I can't print from teh IPad. It can see the printer, as I can turn off printer sharing and the printer disappears from the iPad. Turn it back on and the printer shows up. What doesn't work is "Forget(ing) the Username and Password" for the printer. That should have caused iOS to ask me to input it again.

What is unclear is the root cause of the message "The security of the connection could not be verified"? What connection? It can't be WiFi as one can print to other Airprint printers on the network. It isn't connections to the network discovery SW, otherwise the iPad would not see the printer. So it must be some sort of authentication issue with the account the Airprint for Windows is using, but the message is vague at best.

1. Turn on the guest account with:

Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>User Accounts>Manage Accounts>Change Guest Options

Click "Turn on guest account"

2. Create file airprint.bat containing:

if X%1==XSTOP goto STOP

if X%1==Xstop goto STOP

if X%1==Xoff goto STOP

if X%1==XOFF goto STOP

:START

net user guest ""

sc start AirPrint

goto QUIT

:STOP

sc stop Airprint

net user guest 09ri09f

:QUIT

3. Run the command "airprint off" to protect the guest with a random password (09ri09f in my case).

4. With this file in your PATH, the commands "airprint on" and "airprint off" will alternately remove

the password from the guest and run the airprint service, or turn off the airprint service and replace the

guest password.

I was having this problem too after the iOS11.3 update, see my previous post. The forget username and password button wasn't doing anything either on the iOS device.

However something was fixed just recently because I gave up and suddenly it just started working again. I had not changed anything and 2 days ago I tried it again and it is working. The forget username and password button is working now too.

It was thought that iOS11.1 had changed the security requirements for airprint and the airprint service could no longer handle the new security, however now it is working. I do have a password protected airprint user and it does now prompt for the user and password to connect.

My working setup

The windows airprint service on Sever 2016

TLS1.0 and sha enabled due to Microsoft's Computer Backup service limitations.

Password enabled airprint user in Active Directory

iOS device running v11.2.6

Forwarding DNS service on router with slave to domain controller.

Multicast forwarding enabled

Sorry I am just now replying back. Was off for a bit and wasn't checking my work email.

Yes solosheep. That is the same software I used. I'm not sure it matters, but I'm using it on a machine running Windows 7 Professional, 32bit.

Did you follow the read-me with the software? I did the iOS 5 fix as they call it and then continued. Un-install all the printers before hand?

As for reporting to Apple, yes, I have. I ran beta iOS 11 on my phone for a bit and that is when it started. Reported it. Then went back to 10.... hoping it was just a beta issue. As we can see, it was not.
