IOS 11 Keyboard lag

Hi everyone,

I have an iphone 6s and ever since i upgraded into ios11 i've been having trouble with my keyboard (independently of the app I'm using, so i assume it's a ios problem). The fact is that the keyboard lags A LOT! I actually type much faster than the words/key pressed highlight shows on the phone. This includes symbols... i might finish typing my text (blindly, since the keabord doesn't react fast enough), and wait +/-3seconds before the whole text is shown in the screen... i never had this problem before (it's one of the things i've always liked about the iphone is how reactive the keyboard is with the auto correct and suggestions).

This is a really annoying problem. I've tried to switch off the different keyboard features (automatic correction,...) but i still have the same problem.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks for your help

iPhone 6s, iOS 11

I have experienced the same issue you outlined across multiple devices including the iPhone 6s, 8plus, and X. I have a case outstanding with Apple support but there has not been a fix sent to me yet.

However, this is what I've done to work around the issue. Download a third party keyboard of your choice (I'm using SwiftKey). Set up the permission for use. Go to settings, general, keyboards and add the third party keyboard. Then, remove all other keyboards so you only have the third party listed. Go back to the general keyboard settings and toggle off all settings such as auto-cap, auto-correction, etc. Restart the phone.

This work around has worked so far. Hoping Apple has a fix soon.

This is the fix:

"if you have icloud backup, go to "Apple ID" -> "iCloud" -> "Manage Storage" and delete "TextInput" (or similarly named backup). no amount of reinstall nor restore from backup will help you unless you delete that (the lag comes back after couple hours)... took me 7 restore and 1 phone replacement to figure that out... lag free for 7 days now"

I've done the above and been lag free for a month now.

Guys I know this is an old topic but I’ve been battling with this since the iOS 11 inception too. I’ve tried resetting settings to no avail but today I discovered something I’m not sure if it has been mentioned before but helped me a lot.

Additional to resetting the dictionary, I discovered I had three keyboards displaying (English (UK), Spanish and Emoji) but seven dictionaries checked (in Settings/General/Dictionary) including some French and Portuguese dictionaries. I solved it by deselecting the dictionaries I don’t need and only keeping British English, Spanish and Apple Dictionary.

My theory is that the keyboard starts lagging when trying to do spell check and autocorrect having so many dictionaries to check. Since removing those unwanted dictionaries, my keyboard has improved 100000%.

All keyboard settings such as auto capitalisation, predictive and check spelling are on, except from dictation.

If you still have the keyboard lag let me know if this helped you.

I tried this suggestion from Reddit user seimungbing, and my keyboard has worked smoothly with no issues for 2 weeks now:

"if you have icloud backup, go to "Apple ID" -> "iCloud" -> "Manage Storage" and delete "TextInput" (or similarly named backup). no amount of reinstall nor restore from backup will help you unless you delete that (the lag comes back after couple hours)... took me 7 restore and 1 phone replacement to figure that out... lag free for 7 days now"

It did reset the dictionary, but for me that was a small price to pay.

I've had this problem on my iPhone SE since around November (2017).

None of the recent updates nor suggestions in this thread solved the issue (including full restore).

However, I recently found I was experiencing other issues: the contacts app would drop out if I tried to view any contacts starting from 'M' and the Wallet app would drop out if I tried to add another card.

So, I went to Settings => AppleID, iCloud => iCloud and turned off 'Apps Using iCloud' for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Wallet. It pops up warnings, and I selected 'Keep On iPhone' for all those.

I then found I could view (the now fewer) contacts I had. I returned to the settings and toggled all the iCloud apps back on, and everything re-appeared: but now I can view them without it dropping out. Also, the Wallet no longer drops out.

I then went to check out sending messages (email, etc) and the keyboard lag is no longer present either. It seems to me that something got corrupted between the iPhone and the iCloud servers, and this has managed to reset it.

Aargh, has been driving me insane, I’ve nearly thrown the iPad Pro out the window. It seemed to start when I was trying to use the iPad while it was charging, although then it continued even after unplugging it. It got to a point where I just couldn’t use it, it took forever to type anything.

For now I seem to have a solution, and it’s one of the basic ones. I just reset all settings, in the standard way. All the typing latency/lag has gone, it’s smoking fast now. Hopefully it stays that way.

Hello pirikitta,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with the keyboard on your iPhone after updating the iOS software. If you haven't already, please restart your iPhone as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If your issue still isn't resolved, your next step is to reinstall iOS on your device; this will help us isolate the situation further. Reinstalling iOS should not affect any of your data, but it is always a best practice to make sure you have a current backup in either iTunes or iCloud.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have a current backup, follow the steps from the "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up" section in this article:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on

Use the “Update” option and not “Restore” and these steps will reinstall iOS. Keep in mind that these steps were written for a different issue, but they will still help us isolate the situation further.

Cheers!

A series of conversations with an Apple tech representative completely solved this problem on my iPhone 8. I had tried toggling all the setings off in the keyboard menu. Resetting my phone worked for a while. But it took a series of steps to fix it completely. I don’t know if I needed to do all of them or if just one would have fixed it.

Basically I connected my phone to iTunes with a cable and completely wiped all the information off the phone. I then installed the software as if it were a new phone which put iOS 11.1.2 on the phone. Then I toggled off “predictive” and I now use Swiftkey. That is, in a nutshell, what fixed it. We tried other things, but this is what worked. It was a drag to start all over again (200+apps). But I took screen shots.

I cannot believe the difference. The iPhone works perfectly.

PS. I had tried everything else suggested in this discussion. Deleting the native keyboard, installing Swiftkey, and then reinstalling the native keyboard almost seemed to work. I have read of others completely wiping their iPhone on a yearly basis. I think years restoring from incrementally messed up backups is what finally did my iPhone in.

I've been having this problem for months now, it's switching between contacts, keypad and dialing a number out which is really lagging. Read through the comments on here and tried a few. Just found that in iCloud, turning off photos has made a huge difference. I do have a lot of photos, but only had My Photo Stream turned on, Library and Sharing were already off. Made a miraculous improvement. 🙂
