IOS 11 Keyboard lag

Hi everyone,

I have an iphone 6s and ever since i upgraded into ios11 i've been having trouble with my keyboard (independently of the app I'm using, so i assume it's a ios problem). The fact is that the keyboard lags A LOT! I actually type much faster than the words/key pressed highlight shows on the phone. This includes symbols... i might finish typing my text (blindly, since the keabord doesn't react fast enough), and wait +/-3seconds before the whole text is shown in the screen... i never had this problem before (it's one of the things i've always liked about the iphone is how reactive the keyboard is with the auto correct and suggestions).

This is a really annoying problem. I've tried to switch off the different keyboard features (automatic correction,...) but i still have the same problem.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks for your help

I have experienced the same issue you outlined across multiple devices including the iPhone 6s, 8plus, and X. I have a case outstanding with Apple support but there has not been a fix sent to me yet.

However, this is what I've done to work around the issue. Download a third party keyboard of your choice (I'm using SwiftKey). Set up the permission for use. Go to settings, general, keyboards and add the third party keyboard. Then, remove all other keyboards so you only have the third party listed. Go back to the general keyboard settings and toggle off all settings such as auto-cap, auto-correction, etc. Restart the phone.

This work around has worked so far. Hoping Apple has a fix soon.

This issue is effecting my iPhone 7 too. It happend immediately after updating to iOS11. After 5+ updates it is still not fixed and rather disappointing. The only way I can fix it is to close every other app. I loved iOS because it was something. I never had to worry about, while my Android using friends were constantly closing apps.

Craig Federighi, wth happened with this release?

A series of conversations with an Apple tech representative completely solved this problem on my iPhone 8. I had tried toggling all the setings off in the keyboard menu. Resetting my phone worked for a while. But it took a series of steps to fix it completely. I don’t know if I needed to do all of them or if just one would have fixed it.

Basically I connected my phone to iTunes with a cable and completely wiped all the information off the phone. I then installed the software as if it were a new phone which put iOS 11.1.2 on the phone. Then I toggled off “predictive” and I now use Swiftkey. That is, in a nutshell, what fixed it. We tried other things, but this is what worked. It was a drag to start all over again (200+apps). But I took screen shots.

I cannot believe the difference. The iPhone works perfectly.

PS. I had tried everything else suggested in this discussion. Deleting the native keyboard, installing Swiftkey, and then reinstalling the native keyboard almost seemed to work. I have read of others completely wiping their iPhone on a yearly basis. I think years restoring from incrementally messed up backups is what finally did my iPhone in.

I too have this issue. After having used iPhone since the first one, one aspect that kept me from switching to android had been how solid the iOS platform was. This iOS 11 is the version with the most bugs I’ve ever seen. Not only the keyboard freezing when typing anything but the prediction tool is nuts. My iPhone 6 was barely usable in iOS 10 but on 11 is a mess. I type real fast and it took me about 10 minutes to type this message. Very disappointed at Apple in general...

Well I’m now on iOS 11.2 and if any thing it is worse. I’m actually stuck in hospital with heart failure and all Apple want me to do is plug my iPad into my iMac to restore it, whIch I obviously can’t do. My iPad is almost unusable and my only link with the outside word is my iPad and I was reliant on it. .......I’m afraid that Apple have lost their trusted brand status with me now, when I needed reliability and quality they have let me down with their self generated iOS11 **** up. I can’t see me favouring a Apple product again in the future. Apple seem to have lost their way and their products appear not to be as good as their competitors. Apple don’t seem to understand why I don’t want to install a third party keyboard, or delete my iCloud data, or turn off predictive text etc. What I want is for the product that I’ve paid good money for to work as it should. Is that too much to ask?

I tried this suggestion from Reddit user seimungbing, and my keyboard has worked smoothly with no issues for 2 weeks now:

"if you have icloud backup, go to "Apple ID" -> "iCloud" -> "Manage Storage" and delete "TextInput" (or similarly named backup). no amount of reinstall nor restore from backup will help you unless you delete that (the lag comes back after couple hours)... took me 7 restore and 1 phone replacement to figure that out... lag free for 7 days now"

It did reset the dictionary, but for me that was a small price to pay.

I have this problem too. For me, it is beyond just some delays, it's a huge issue. I cannot send the full text of messages I want to send, I look unprofessional as my typing is getting messed up, etc. Just typing any random character sequence, locks it up for 8 seconds or more. For each edit. In the middle of a professional exchange. Thus taking *minutes* to respond.

I have a (4 month old) 6S that this is happening on. So, I bought a iPhone 8 and tried using it instead. First from backup, then, using the only solution they are giving me, which is to NOT USE MY BACKUP, set up a phone from scratch. Given I had no choice, I tried that. Guess what, only a hour into that work of setting it up... the iPhone 8 was starting to exhibit the SAME PROBLEM. This is a fresh phone, no backup, no "bad software stuck in the backup".

This is just unacceptable. Apple, we need a solution. This is affecting my well-being.

The fact that it's happening on a new and powerful device is very strange. You should definitely have that checked in an Apple Store. Meanwhile, installing a third party keyboard such as SwiftKey will keep you from going totally nuts.

Also, I'm guessing that you used the same icloud account on both devices. You should definitely go in the icloud settings > manage data > and clear "text input"

This is the fix:

"if you have icloud backup, go to "Apple ID" -> "iCloud" -> "Manage Storage" and delete "TextInput" (or similarly named backup). no amount of reinstall nor restore from backup will help you unless you delete that (the lag comes back after couple hours)... took me 7 restore and 1 phone replacement to figure that out... lag free for 7 days now"

I've done the above and been lag free for a month now.
