High Sierra requires a firmware update for Mac Pro Server Mid 2012

I have downloaded High Sierra on my Mac Pro Server Mid 2012 version and the installer says I must run a firmware update before it will install.

Where do I get the firmware update for the computer?

When I perform the steps to do the firmware update the cd-rom drive opens, so I suspect that I need a cd-rom with the firmware update on it.

I found the fix for this issue. The fix was to turn off my firewire external hard drive before turning the computer back on in firmware update mode. This allowed the firmware to install successfully and High Sierra to be installed afterwards.

Older firmware updates gives the warning that some usb and firewire devices may cause issues with installing firmware updates, but the High Sierra installation screen did not give this warning.

This post on Macintouch discusses a silent firmware update (it was written by the Macintouch administrator) and if you scroll down, you'll see other, less detailed mentions of it too. I'd suggest checking other people's experiences before doing your own installation unless you just must have the latest OS.

I got the same warning you did on a 2010 Mac Pro and have held off, not knowing what impact that might have on earlier versions of Mac OS X and macOS installed (one of the beauties of four drive bays).

Yeah,John, I think you’re right. However-understanding the process is nice-what’s going on underneath the hood, so to speak-but I’m still stumped as to why it doesn’t want to “ take”. The HS installer says I need a firmware update- fine- do your voodoo-asks permission to install a helper app-says I have to be logged in as administrator- which I am-so-I type in the password and press “ok” and return- I see the spinning wheel for a bit-eventually it shuts down- I do the firmware upgrade button press- wait for the blinks and the long tone- release the button-the screen goes dark-I hear a little hard drive noise( the normal kind) and..... it boots up back to the desktop and the HS installer... no grey screen, no progress bar, nada. I know I’m beating a dead horse here- just thought someone else could shed some light on to why or why not it doesn’t work- some have said ‘ yup no problems’ and others have said ‘ nope, not happening’ or ‘ yes... but....I have problems...’

So for now I’m stuck in the middle group..not a huge problem... more of a ‘ hmmm... what’s up with that?? How come it doesn’t want to go??’

Guess I’ll have to wait for a fix

Thanks for your help

JB
