Receiving messages on my Mac are now extremely delayed since installing High Sierra. They will show up on my iPhone, but without a notification so I can't see or hear it. Then several minutes later it will pop up on the Mac. I didn't have this issue with Sierra, and would rather not downgrade. Anybody else with this issue or suggestions on how to fix this?

Any app that checks location makes the messages sync for a while. Try it. It’s very weird.
I agree that it’s a software issue. I’m hoping that it resolves when they implement “messages in iCloud” in a future update, but who knows when that will be.
Agree with you that it’s a software issue and not iCloud related. Let’s hope this gets fixed soon.
Didn't say it was messages hanging the audio server. For example, I have a clock chime app that accesses the audio system, plus a camera and all kinds of things...

I gave up. Reverted back to Sierra and have absolutely zero intention of upgrading again. Messages in High Sierra went backwards way too much for my liking.
Lag is about 20 min here...
i have the same issue ... the apple is forcing me to test all kind of stuff - some things I have repeated now 3 times .. and it's still not working
on MP with Sierra it work perfectly
That's a good thought, but I don't use the sound notification and Messages is never stuck or unresponsive, it's just not updating. I can always go and send a message without issue.
i had this same problem and i seemed to have fixed it by singing out of imessage....(not icloud, just imessage).
after doing this it all seems to be back to normal...i think. more testing to be done.
i tried all things were i can log out ... this always helped for a few minutes ... but then it's again broken
I turn off "play sound effects" in the Preferences and I get messages on my Mac Mini now. My iPhone still beeps, so that's fine.
Eh, disabling location didn't fix the issue for me. 😟
Location fix didn't do anything for me either. 😟
I turned off the sound, and my messages work now.
