high sierra: keyboard not responding after update

Hello. Today I updated my late 2013 MBP to macOS Hight Sierra. Everything was fine, but after few hours of work keyboard and touchpad stopped reacting. I force turned off computer by holding power button, and now can't login: i click to my profile - nothing happened. I connected usd mouse - also not working for click (but cursor is moving). I tried to use keyboard (Tab and Enter) to login - nope. I rebooted to restore mode, was able to see menu (restore from time machine, reinstall os and etc), I was able to move selection in this menu using keyboard arrows, but other buttons not working.

Any ideas, what else I can try?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Hi Folks,

I've been dealing with this issue for the last couple of months now. Tried all possible things that have been posted din the forum. Ended up spending $450 because the Genuis Bar folks decided it was a HW issue and replaced the entire keyboard and trackpad. This was inspite of me telling Apple support and genius bar that this started to happen after upgrade to High Sierra.

Even after the HW upgrade, once I reinstalled my data fro TM backup, the problem was back again. The only way i was able to address this is

1) Back up data into TM

2) Erase the HDD and went into Internet recovery mode

3) After the internet recovery mode, it suggested installing El Capitan (i guess that was the last best known configuration that was there on my system)

4) Installed El Capitan, the relevant security updates etc

5) From my TM, copied only the data

Its been a few days and everything is working fine. Hope Apple realizes that they have an issue with High Sierra and addresses it. They should also ensure their Genius Bar folks are aware of this instead of trying to do a standard HW replace.

Which is a direct indication that the issue is software NOT hardware related. I have a 2015 15" Retina MBP. I'm running the latest release of High Sierra, with an external bluetooth keyboard and USB mouse.

  1. At random and infrequent intervals the mouse will freeze
  2. I try a separate bluetooth mouse and it works initially and then freezes after a few seconds
  3. I try the keyboard, it works, but freezes after a few seconds
  4. The MBP keyboard and trackpad are frozen
  5. The OS is still running, the screen blanks (screen saver) after a few minutes as it should
  6. It's just that all of the attached input devices are non-responsive

Started with High Sierra, never had the issue before the High Sierra install.

If the genius (term used loosely) bar is charging you to replace track pads and keyboards and the problem persists that's bordering on the criminal.

It is clearly a known issue (revert to 10.12.6 as a fix) so Apple should provide a genuine fix not try a gazillion things and hope one of them works. It is clear Apple have not identified the root cause (if they have they haven't identified a fix) and are simply proffering a trial and error fix methodology in the hope you will go away. It really isn't good enough....

I am having very similar issues with my 2015 13" Macbook Pro. It started about a month ago and initially it was correlated with the Bluetooth on my MBP turning on spontaneously and giving me a pop-up message that it could not find a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard and neither my trackpad or keyboard would work. I turned off the Bluetooth and rebooted the computer and sometimes my keyboard and trackpad would work again but usually not. The Bluetooth message also comes up again every so often after rebooting.

I have tried rebooting resetting SMC or PRAM and again, sometimes the PRAM resets brings back the keyboard and trackpad but usually not.

I am only running Sierra (10.12.6) and I still have these issues so it is not clear to me that the problem is linked specifically to High Sierra.

The other thing, which may be coincidental, is that these problems started happening shortly after I got and iPhone 8 so I thought the Bluetooth message was a result of my phone trying to connect to my MBP.

I also thought my MBP might have contracted the Blueborne Bluetooth virus so I did a complete scan with ClamXAV but nothing came up.

I am fairly confident this is some kind of bug and not a hardware problem but the whole thing is very frustrating because I now need to take a USB keyboard and mouse everywhere I go.

I have the same problem after I upgraded. I took my late 2015 Macbook pro to an Apple certified service center where they ran full diagnostics on the device and saw that everything is OK.

I talked with Apple support and they tried to setup a test user which seemed to fix the problem, but it came back this morning.

The Apple rep confirmed that this is a known issue, and they are working on it. I hope that they will have a fix soon as I don't really want to go back to the default OSX which came with the Mac and reinstall everything.

High Sierra is the worst Mac OSX release ever!!

Could be hardware or software. I know that in my case changing the cable solved it. Might be a high Sierra issue that might be solved in the future but I need my Mac to work, so I authorized the fix. Cost me $90 which *****, but at least it's working for now. This could be a hardware failure that happened right after the upgrade and led us think it's the OSX, or indeed a software issue. I doubt that a software issue was solved by a hardware repair, but I have friends who upgraded and fried their hard drive so anything is possible

I have the same problem. Absolutely same. In official Apple service thay suggested stupid ideas ..... change first IPD flex fleet keybord cable (I ordered this via ebay 8$) the price will be 90$, if it doesn't solve the problem next is top cover 650$ and if after that doesn't working well you have to change Logic Board 680$. Elimination method but I should pay it.....

I am also having a very similar issue: When my MacBook Pro, Retina, Mid 2015 running high sierra 10.13.3 has been asleep for awhile (usually overnight, definitely more than a few hours) when I wake it back up to login it fails to connect to the internal keyboard and trackpad. What's odd is that both will wake the MacBook from sleep, but then when the login screen appears the trackpad and keyboard don't respond. I have connected an external mouse and keyboard via USB which works and allows me to login. Once I login I still have no control over the internal keyboard and mouse, in system preferences the trackpad section says no trackpad found, the keyboard section has the info about my external Dell keyboard but not the internal one. However, when I go to system info I can see the internal keyboard and trackpad listed under the USB 3.0 bus. So it seems like the kernel is finding the devices but for some reason the device drivers aren't loading?

Anyway, if I reboot the system the internal keyboard and trackpad start working again. However this is extremely inconvenient as I have lost work due to this problem when I didn't have an external keyboard and mouse around and had to gain control of the system. We need this to be fixed ASAP!!!!!

Oh and yes I have tried resetting SMC and PRAM with no luck. The problem still comes back after letting the system sleep long enough. This is reminiscent of the sleep wake failure I used to see regularly in Yosemite.

@twestwood ..... you issue seems to be different. It was a hardware issue according to what you are saying. What I and others here are experiencing is a software issue that was the result of upgrading to High Sierra. Before upgrading I was on Yosemite and did not have any problems with my trackpad or keyboard. Also, a reboot without resetting SMC or PRAM fixes the problem for me. This seems like a sleep wake failure with the OS not a hardware issue

Hello some_lun!

I have a similar issue with my 2015 MacBook. After updating to High Sierra, the keyboard (including the power button) has simply stopped working. I am not able to turn the Macbook on, and the screen is all black. However, after pressing all the keys vigorously for a long time + plugging and unplugging the power cord several times, it sometimes turnes itself on again. I am then able to log in and use the Macbook as normal, with the keyboard responding just fine. However, when I put it to sleep again, the same thing happens all over again. Not able to turn it on, the keyboard not responding at all. I have tried resetting the SMC using the SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION + POWER BUTTON combination, but nothing works. It is simply completely random whether it turns on or not. I have not had any issues whatsoever before updating to High Sierra, Any idea what this is?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi there,

I have an early 2015 mbp 13 inches and had the same issues as well. Whenever I open my mbp after several hours of sleep the trackpad and the keyboard simply won't work. I reseted the SMC, NVRAM, initialised the hard drive, clean install of high Sierra and the problem persists. I brought the machine at an apple store, they cleaned up the track pad's and the keyboard's connectors in the hope that it would solve the issue. Still happening, unfortunately.

Any thoughts? They told me to get the track pad and keyboard replaced should the problem continue.

Best,

L

Hello, everyone.

When it happened to me, I tried what I described above, nothing helped, so I went to sleep. In the morning I turned on my computer - still no response from keyboard, so I started to do IRL stuff and came back after maybe 1 hour, but found, that it works again. I don't know what was that, but since that time keyboard is working very well.

This same problem happened to my late 2015 IMac and it’s wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. I made an appointment at the Apple Store. They ran diagnostics using a web boot and the hardware was fine. The USB mouse and keyboard at the Apple Store worked fine. The technician reset the wireless connection of my mouse and keyboard. Things are mostly back to normal. The technician thought that having the iMac unplugged for 15-20 minutes was helpful to clear out any Bluetooth connections problems. He also performed a PRAM reset.

I noticed something slightly different. When I boot up High Sierra, the keyboard and mouse do not connect automatically. I have to press a key on the keyboard once, wait about 5 seconds, then click the mouse once followed by wait time. They will both connect after this procedure.
