HEVC 4k not supported on retina MBP

How old is your MacBook Pro?

The article link posted above by Apple states:

Mac models from mid 2015 or earlier work with HEVC video that was captured at no greater than 1080p/240 fps.

So unless your Retina MBP is late 2015 or later, it cannot display HEVC 4K video.

1080/240fps is a lot more than, say, 4K at 30fps, so without further testing I am not taking the text of that article as meaning an older mac can use 4K in HEVC.

I will try to test this when I have a little time. I would be disappointed if it turns out to be accurate... as I have an iPhone 7, capable of recording HEVC 4K clips, and a 2014 rMBP...

Yes! With quick time, absolutely no problems. The strange case is in photo, where this kind of videos doesn’t work. in quick time or other I can see the videos without problem... I can understand why!

Yes, I upgraded to Sierra 10.12.6 but when I try to edit a photo taken on my iP7 and imported into Photos I get this error message: "Updated Software Required. This image was captured in an unsupported image format. To edit this photo you need to upgrade to the latest version of macOS." I have this problem on some, not all, photos taken with my iPhone and imported into Photos.

What is an unsupported image format and how do I avoid it?

Hi, have you try? I called Apple about that and the problem remains: if I put a video HEVC (taken with ipad pro) on MBP 15 mid2014 via USB on Photo app, it doesn't work!

What OS are you running? HEVC is only supported in High Sierra, 10.13. If you have Sierra, El Capitan or earlier, it does not work, unless you download a third party application like VLC.

I know, in fact I'm using the latest versions: High Sierra 10.13 and ios 11.0.3. I also called Apple, but without result. The strange case is that: if I send the video via airdrop from ipad to mac, automatically, the ipad convert the video in H.264, but via usb in Photo the video remains HEVC and it doesn't work.

That's a bit surprising. I do not use videos in Photos, so I would not have stumbled upon this myself. I would have assumed that it would work.

As a test, I just imported one HEVC video into Photos (not from an iPad or iPhone, right from my drive) and it played correctly...

I have a 2014 15" rMBP.

HEVC plays in Quicktime, Photos, and iMovie. It still does not work in FCP X (support for it is coming in FCP X 10.4, which was announced for later this year).

And of course it plays in VLC (this actually already worked before High Sierra).

Did you try playing in Quicktime Player?

Same MacBook pro? In my case it’s really strange... I can’t use the h.265 on ipad pro 😞. I also tried with a new installation of macos high sierra
