iphone 8 mic problems

New problem. The new iphone 8 is great, but it is failing as a phone. During calls, the mic will suddenly stop and my callers will go, "are you there? Are you there?" I can still hear them, but they cannot hear me. Ideas? BTW, I am having a variety of other issues with IOS 11...

We may have a solution, although it does not seem to make sense. After a lot of effort, an Apple genius said to go to the General settings on the phone and reset the network. Haven't seen the same problem since.

Apple is not admitting that they have a mic problem in some of the latest iPhones. If they admit, they have to give new iPhones to every user. Please replace your one. It will work. Because, they have ran diagnostics and they have said I have no mic problem. However, when I actually get a call, everyone can hear me as I am speaking from far away. So I have made a complain and got a new iPhone for free. The replaced one has no mic problems and everyone saying they can hear me in crystal clear. Even whispering make a clear sound. My advice is to get your iPhone 8 replaced, still you are under warranty.

I’m having the same issue even though i replaced the device. Mine is w/ at&t and here’s a temp solution i have is changing the cellular data option “ data only” from voice & data. (Setting>cellular data> cellular data option> select “data only”). No issues after changed the option. I’m wondering what carrier you guys are on. VOLTE is the service provided by the carrier for clear call quality, but mine ***** on that option!

Folks,

I had the same issue. After severals calls & visit to Apple the issue persisted, tried everything including restoring as a new phone etc.

Finally solved it. It was folio cover from Procase that I was using. My guess is that the magnetic clasp on the folio was somehow causing issues and maybe due to the glass back cover instead of metal.

So, the phone is ok, its the cover. Using a standard iphone 8-Plus case and the phone audio is pretty pretty good.

Hello! This thread has been a major help and saved me a ton of time so I thank all of you for your input. Please continue reading for my conclusion.

None of the settings changes listed previously are likely to work. They didn’t work for me or most people. A new phone is also unlikely to fix this problem as it seems related to software design (I.e. a bug)

If your issue is not caused by a phone case blocking the mic then I think I have found some clarity:

Your iPhone is designed to detect when the phone is against your face and adjusts the microphone sensitivity to deliver sound that it perceives to be at “normal” volume.

When placing your phone on SPEAKER the microphone sensitivity adjusts to become more sensitive because it assumes your phone is further from your face, and therefore your voice is more distant.

From my own calling tests I have found the sensitivity produces a “normal” speaking volume only when the microphone is in this increased sensitivity. This is why putting the phone on SPEAKER seems to fix the problem. Turning my own phone volume down so my phone can still be against my ear seems to replicate a normal phone conversation as much as possible. Without having a loudspeaker pressed against my face. Also using the mic/earbud setup included with the phone seems to work.

In summary: the issue seems to be the adjustment of sensitivity in the lower microphones. If anyone finds a settings fix for this please reply. But unfortunately it seems that SPEAKER mode, with your volume turned down is the only quick fix at this time. Hopefully APPLE is working on this bug and it will miraculously disappear in an update.

Please note that I am not a programmer. I simply enjoy solving problems and this conclusion is to the best of my ability. Happy calling!

I also have the same problem. iPhone 8 1 week old. People kept complaining that I sounded underwater or they couldn’t hear at all. When I switched to speaker, all was great. Earbud conversations good also. Voice memo worked fine.

I could hear them no problem.

Read most of these suggestions tried as many as I could. Spent most of today talking with Apple support and att. Nothing worked.

Bottom line, went to Apple store , they were very nice and helpful. But ended up replacing the phone. So far , the few calls I’ve made are good. But now the keyboard clicks, and other sounds, come and go. Hope that’s the only glitch.

Good luck to anyone with this issue. It’s so frustrating.

Hi All,

let me share my experience with this problem and its solution ( for me ).

Bought iPhone 8 A1905 4 days ago, all seemed fine with IOS 11.1.1

I updated to 11.1.2 and then the problems started - same as all of you are mentioning - ( and got a bit upset ).

I investigated a bit to isolate the problem and:

  • Voice memos are fine
  • Video recording audio is fine
  • Whatsapp audio messages are fine
  • Bluetooth audio in the car is ok
  • Call with earphones are ok

The problem occurs only when calling on a "standard" phone call. Looks like the software mixes up the inputs from the 3 different microphones.

I was ready to downgrade to 11.1.1 but before doing that I tried some workarounds:

  • Performed a full restore with iTunes (IOS 11.1.2)
  • Turned off noise cancellation
  • LTE - data only
  • Soft reset

the problem seems to be disappeared ( for now ). This is not a real solution to the problem, but I will keep noise cancellation off until Apple solves this with an update.

Hope this will help someone.

Cheers

My experience from having problems with Apple products is that you need to exchange it for a new phone at an Apple store (if you are within the 14 day period). Just keep exchanging phones until you get one that works. If you are within the 14 day period there are not questions. I have found Apple Care (calling) less than helpful. And it always takes a week or two (which eats through the 14 days) and generally nothing is resolved. I have had issues with all of my iPhones since my 5. Apple Care (calling) never helps. If an issue pops up within the first 14 days the phone goes back now.

So this guy below (square crocodile) posted what I believe is the actual problem. Thought I'd share since most people don't really know what's going on and are doing all sorts of inconvenient things with their phones to try and "fix" a problem that can't be fixed without phone replacement (even then that is no guarantee that the new iPhone replacement will work). Good luck.

Hello,

I found out that when you normal use the phone, that it uses 1 microphone at the bottom, near the charging connector.

When you have the phone in speaker mode than it uses all 3 microphones, the one at the bottom, at the top and the one next to the camera lens.

My experimenting shows that if you speak loud when using the phone in normal mode the sound is OK. When you start to speak at normal level or at lower level the microphone at the bottom starts to "clip" the audio to a very low level, if you rase your voce again the sound is good again.

After lot's of contact with apple and two complete new clean installations with Itunes the problem was still there.

I told Apple I want my money back or a new Phone. They only wanted to repair my new Iphone 8.

I went back to the store where I bought my phone and changed my phone for a new one.

After I got home I did a clean install as a new phone and inserted my SIM card.

I phoned my wifes phone and put it to my ear while I started to speak soft in my new phone.

All sounded OK, no problem with low voice level. I switched over to speaker mode on the new Iphone 8 and it sounded the same OK, I switched back to normal mode and now the problem was there again, at low voice level the Iphone 8 microphone cut's the audio level to a even lower level. I switched the option for reducing audio noise OFF in settings but no difference.

So this is my second brand new Iphone 8 with the same problem.

Next week I get a brand new SIM card from my provider to check if it has anything to do with the modulation from the lower microphone to the GSM network.

When I have new experiment results I will post them here.
