iphone 8 mic problems

New problem. The new iphone 8 is great, but it is failing as a phone. During calls, the mic will suddenly stop and my callers will go, "are you there? Are you there?" I can still hear them, but they cannot hear me. Ideas? BTW, I am having a variety of other issues with IOS 11...

Exact same problem here .. Iphone 8 plus latest ios installed. Callers claim they here windy noise and voice drops out. I am going to exchange phone as I am in return period but I do not have much hope for a new one to work any better. This is very frustrating I hope it is software and not hardware. There is also a 38 page community discussion with the same problem with Iphone 7

I just read through all the problems and the crazy part is I told my wife to put me on the speaker phone while we try some solutions and it was clear as a bell (I mean super clear)? I would think speaker phone and the phone to ear would use the same mic? I am always saying "you sound like your underwater, and you keep cutting out." Saw the Settings-Cellular- Cellular Data Options-Enable LTE-but DATA ONLY is greyed out? $800 IPhone 8 plus 3 weeks old.

Hello,

I found out that when you normal use the phone, that it uses 1 microphone at the bottom, near the charging connector.

When you have the phone in speaker mode than it uses all 3 microphones, the one at the bottom, at the top and the one next to the camera lens.

My experimenting shows that if you speak loud when using the phone in normal mode the sound is OK. When you start to speak at normal level or at lower level the microphone at the bottom starts to "clip" the audio to a very low level, if you rase your voce again the sound is good again.

After lot's of contact with apple and two complete new clean installations with Itunes the problem was still there.

I told Apple I want my money back or a new Phone. They only wanted to repair my new Iphone 8.

I went back to the store where I bought my phone and changed my phone for a new one.

After I got home I did a clean install as a new phone and inserted my SIM card.

I phoned my wifes phone and put it to my ear while I started to speak soft in my new phone.

All sounded OK, no problem with low voice level. I switched over to speaker mode on the new Iphone 8 and it sounded the same OK, I switched back to normal mode and now the problem was there again, at low voice level the Iphone 8 microphone cut's the audio level to a even lower level. I switched the option for reducing audio noise OFF in settings but no difference.

So this is my second brand new Iphone 8 with the same problem.

Next week I get a brand new SIM card from my provider to check if it has anything to do with the modulation from the lower microphone to the GSM network.

When I have new experiment results I will post them here.

Thanks for info on microphone. They told me that Apple should replace your phone for a new one up to a year. But it seems like that’s not a guarantee it will work. I feel like the problem exists more in the 8 plus than the 8’s. Thinking of switching my 8 plus for an 8. If it will get rid of this problem because I can’t use my phone to speak. Very frustrating!

So since I posted about the mic problems have Changed the Settings>Cellular> Data Roaming Options>Enable LTE> DATA ONLY ! By changing it from VOICE & DATA to DATA only it seems to be working. My wife’s voice has been clear, no underwater, no cut-outs?

Thank You to whoever posted about that solution, seems to be working.

Hello,

I tried the same option Data or Data and Voice but no difference.

As soon as the voice in the normal bottom microphone get's lower in volume the sound at the receiving side starts to clipp and/or becomes very weak. As soon as you raise your voice to a louder level the sound gets normal again.

Easy test is to put another (receiving) phone (Upside down) on one ear and the Iphone 8 in normal position on the other ear. Make a connection and start speaking/counting loud en than go softer on your voice. At a certain level you will hear that your voice level is suddenly decreasing to a very low level. Keep this level and distance to the microphone while putting the Iphone 8, (the one witch you are calling with) in Speaker mode, you will hear a sudden inccrease in volume and everything is very clear to hear. As soon as you put the Iphone 8 in normal mode again the sound is very weak again.

This really *****. My iphone 8 plus that I just got has this problem. The sound gets smaller and smaller and disappears and when I speak louder, it picks up. I thinks problem with sensitivities. It's not practical nor usable day to day. This problem is pretty big one and Apple should find a way to fix it.

I hope they realize this is a real issue.

I feel your pain....... I over exhausted too many 8’s. Apple claims they never heard of this. As I mentioned, I own 5 8’s all do it. SIM card won’t help. The only possible fix is put it on speakerphone and then turn it off. See what happens. It’s a microphone transfer issue being the phone uses 1 of 2 mics when on call. Then the microphone closer to your mouth is then turned on and the other does nothing until you move the phone. In other words, talk on the left side...left mic enables.....right side, right mic enables. Speakerphone, both enable.
