iOS 11 podcast autoplay

Anyone figured out a way around Apple ditching podcast autoplay/play next in ios11? I’ll listen to multiple episodes on a run and found out the hard way this feature was jettisoned after updating my phone. I know there’s a “play next” feature, but can’t find a way to view what is scheduled to play next. It’s annoying to have to go through several screens to set it up and have no way to back track and see what was entered. Why would Apple get rid of such a simple interface for this?

This flummoxed me, too. When you're looking at the episode that is currently playing--the Now Playing screen, though it's not labeled as such--keep swiping up to beneath the Episode Notes and you'll see (editable) Up Next.

I was hoping that by reading these replies that someone had a solution. Doesn't look like it. I don't like not being able to plat my podcasts continuously. What happened???? And why has Apple not done something about this by now? there are so many people complaining, you'd think Apple would have taken notice.

I'm going to a 3rd party app so i can listen to all my shows. It's called PodCruncher, but I had to pay for it. Not cool, Apple.

I completely agree with everyones comments about how this update has completely ruined podcasts.

I never usually comment on things like this but this ios11 update for podcasts is ridiculous.

Very simple before, play oldest to newest. Why change that??? I now have to look at my phone while driving to select a new episode? Super safe apple!!!! I get there's Suri, play next and making stations or whatever but WHY????? Why would we have to do that when it was so simple before. Inconvenient and ridiculous "update".

Apple tries so hard to be different and on the forfront of the technological wave that they often overcomplicate for no reason other then to be new.

Will be finding a new podcast player. See ya later apple podcast player! Good Riddance!

I was thinking the exact same thing. I listen to podcasts on my commute everyday and when one episode ends it's helpful for the next one to play automatically so that I'm not distracted while driving. The silent commute I experienced the other day when the next episode didn't play and I wasn't in position to make it play... I was so upset! I know tons of other people also listen while driving. How dumb to add a feature that encourages safe driving, and take away another. And autoplay is just really convenient even if you're not driving. I am going to look for another platform to listen to podcasts on and I hope that all my favorite podcasts are available there. Also, there are too many screens and menus to navigate just to play a darn podcast! Fix it Apple!!

Thanks for your comment. I was helpful in explaining stations, but I don't think this is one of those resistant to change moments fro everyone. While this works for you, there are many people who listen to podcasts differently. I have lots of podcasts I listen to. I don't listen to each one on a weekly basis. I usually listen to multiple episodes of one podcast then the next week I may move on to another podcast and listen to several episodes from that one, and so on. Some days I don't decide what I'm in the mood for until I get in my car. It is very inconvenient to make stations for every podcast I listen to just so I can get them to play automatically. What is the purpose of having all of my podcasts listed in the Shows menu, if I still have to create a station for each one separately. Imagine having 10+ stations! That's too much work and way too many menus just to have autoplay. It should be an option as before to choose a podcast from the shows menu and start playing an episode and having it autoplay the rest of the episode from that podcast in the order that you have set. Apple making changes isn't a problem for me, expect when those changes completely ruin the functionality and my overall experience.

I agree. A total stuff up by Apple. Having to pull over to the side of the road every time I want to move to the next podcast in a series that I am listening to, and go through a series of clicks, is just annoying, and a waste of time. Or not possible if you are on a freeway or major road at peak hour. And now of course, the controls on the steering wheel in my car can't advance you to the next podcast, or take you back to the start of the current one. So they are now non-functional.

How can they delete a major convenience, and safety, aspect of the app just to make it a bit more like its music app. It's rubbish. Am going to move over to a new podcast manager.

Incredibly frustrating that the last update completely ruined my podcast listening experience, which was one of the features I liked most about having an IPhone. This change took something that was highly usable and turned it into a nearly unusable item. I previously listened to 6+ podcasts a day and have listened to 2-3 in total since upgrading in early October. The lost functionality of auto play and the changes to sort are terrible. Previously I could start at the top of my list and auto play the newest podcast to the next until it was complete or I chose to stop. The required actions now are dangerous especially when driving a car. Previously I would start my podcast before driving and it would keep playing until I arrived at my destination. Until resolved I will need to unsubscribe to all podcasts and not reopen the application. This will be a big reason to consider another platform for my next phone after being an iPhone user since the first publicly released model. I hope this is not a sign to come for future changes. Please resolve so that I can enjoy my iPhone and IPad experience again.

You do seem to be having difficulties and I don't have an answer. Now that I have, under sufferance, set up a station for each of the series I listen to, I am having no issues and it works just like it did before the recent poor quality update by Apple. But I certainly have an Edit button in the Stations screen and my podcasts don't stop when the phone goes to sleep. So your situation is strange. Perhaps just shut your phone completely down and start it up again. The old trick with computers - try turning it off and on again.
