Can't edit or share my iPhone photos

Hi,

Since upgrading to iOS 11, I've discovered some strange behaviour in the Camera and Photos app. Any photo which I have taken recently can't be edited or shared. (The icons are greyed out).

Anyone know why this is?

I can still share photos by going into the Messages app and attaching them, just not from the Camera or Photos app. I suspect that once I sync via wifi that makes the photos editable/shareable, but it is annoying to have to do this and not be able to edit them straight away. I suspect a mobile data setting, but no amount of playing around has been able to resolve it.

I have a 128Gb iPhone 6s, running iOS 11.0 (15A372). There's plenty of free space.

Hi All,

I think I found the answer. If you don’t have iCloud Photo Library option switched on in preferences for the Photos app then you get this problem. I switched this off when I was trying to save data, and switching it back on resolved the issue.

I hope this helps.

Greetings, StoicTheGeek .

After reviewing your post, it appears that the photos you take with the Camera and Photos applications on your iPhone aren't behaving as expected. When you view the photo through either application, it's replaced by a gray box and you're unable to edit or share them. I'm happy help you with this.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- First, force close the Camera and/or Photos application(s) if it's/they're open, then Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Either view the previous photo or take another photo once you're back to the Home screen and test.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- If restarting your phone didn't resolve the issue, please be sure to have a fresh backup to keep your personal information safe. In order to back up your Health data, the backup needs to be encrypted. iCloud does this automatically, but iTunes doesn't. If you'd like to use iTunes to back up your phone, refer to this article: About encrypted backups in iTunes

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, the section titled "Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again" will walk you through all the steps to reinstall the iOS software on your device. Test the issue once your phone has returned to the Home screen.

Let me know how that goes and take care!

If you use iCloud Photo Library and Optimize IPhone Storage option, it might be a problem with your cloud library. I would recommend getting on the phone with Apple Support and getting them to transfer you to a Photos app specialist. They can have someone examine your iCloud Photo Library as there might be something in the cloud clogging up the memory/bandwidth, which can take about a week.

I did it a few weeks ago and everything seems to be working perfectly again—no longer having problems with editing/sharing photos.
