AppleSpell problem with High Sierra

This has been bothering me since High Sierra, and I think I have tracked it down, but I'm not entirely sure, so would appreciate people helping me test what I've found.

After disabling Address book syncing (I noticed AddressBook in process information for AppleSpell), this seems to have bought the CPU spike down significantly. This isn't an ideal solution, but as I said, before going any further I'd like to know if this helps others.

Hmm, dunno then, it seems to have resolved mine. I tracked it down by using Activity Monitor to click the 'i' icon and then 'sample', and I noticed entries for Address Book. You could try the same thing and see if it's any different? I can't find any more user friendly way of figuring this stuff out sorry.

I opened the 'Contacts' application in the preferences -> accounts tab, I unchecked 'enable this account' in each account. Does that work for you/make any difference?

I have similar issues. Here is the link to the issue. Just copying over the observations:

1> When using Safari, data input became extreemly slow, after typing about 10 characters, I will start seeing the first character shows up.

2> AppleSpell kept running at 100% CPU (even through total CPU usage is not high). This process also reaches 30, 40, 60GB memory. Memory pressure becomes high....

3> My VMWare crashes once every 1 hour (I assume caused by AppleSpell).

4> Sometimes Macos also crashes.

Also, I do use Atom as my editor. Initially, I thought that was the cause. However, even without using Atom, AppleSpell shows up. AppleSpell obviously have a bug that keep increasing memory and eventually kill the OS.

By deleting AppleSpell you are just addressing a symptom of a problem, not its underlying cause. That means additional manifestations of it are certain to arise, in addition to depriving other processes that rely upon that service.

If and when you want to address that problem, please write back.

I have the same problem actually. Not up to 150%, but a lot higher than it used to be before High Sierra. I wonder, do you use Atom? Or what other text based applications do you use frequently?

Interesting. If it's not part of "OS X", why is it running on four of my Macs on High Sierra and what might /System/Library/Services/AppleSpell.service.app be?

Chris, do you mind to explain a bit in detail (how did you disable address book sync?). I have disabled contact in both "icloud" and "internet account" in system preferences. And I still got the same problem. Thanks.

FWIW, something else is your problem. Just checking Activity Monitor, AppleSpell is using 0.0% - 0.4% CPU. Not sure what file you are planning to delete anyway.

As I said, there is some other problem causing it to reach 150%. It's not AppleSpell itself.
