Black screen with loading bar after logging in (High Sierra)

After upgrading to High Sierra, sometimes when i log in and enter my password after a restart, the screen turns black and only the loading bar is visible. I can see my background behind the loading bar but everything else is black (it's clearly not intended to be black).

Tried to format the computer completely and reinstall the os but the problem persists. I'm using a late 2013 macbook pro 15" retina (GT 750M GPU).

edit: typo's.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13), null

I had this problem too, turns out it was a GPU driver update issue. I do not know if this applies to your specific model of MacBook Pro, but it might. I downloaded the drivers from the following two links and it now only shows my background image rather than the odd black screen with progress bar:

NVIDIA CUDA 9.0 for Mac OSX Drivers 9.0.197

Quadro & GeForce macOS Driver Release: 378.10.10.10.15.114 - for High Sierra

This will also install an updater for the Quadro/GeForce part of the mix (not CUDA) even though I have historically always updated these manually in the past.

If you have other graphics cards installed in your computers, check the original manufacturer's website for drivers.

Hope this helps.

I can't download a driver for Mac OSX at the website of nvidia.com, for the Geforce GT 750 M.

The driver that is part of the OS is not working properly at a Mac Book Pro Late 2013 with High Sierra installed.

If you have the correct driver for us, let us know!

I have never downloaded any drivers for the GPU. I just use the ones provided with the OS.

My mac is the 2014 version, which has the same GT750M GPU as the 2013.

I don't think there is a problem with the driver.

Come to think of it, it is quite likely that the system is using the integrated Intel GPU - by default, it will use the Intel one unless one application demands more graphics power (such as with Final Cut Pro), or using more than one display. You may want to force the use of the discrete GPU and see if that makes any difference (to do that, uncheck the box for "Automatic Graphics switching" in System Preferences->Energy Saver).

Most (but certainly not all) of the problems after the upgrade end up being caused by something particular to the user's installation. Since no two are the same, this often makes it harder to pinpoint the problem. That is why we see every day many recommendations to run Etrecheck and post the report - so that the ones trying to help get to have a notion of what software is running and have a chance at spotting possible culprits.

Thank you for sharing your solution, but my FileVault is not even turned on and my MBP 10,1 (15" mid 2012) shows the same problem, anyways: the loading process stops when the progress bar reaches 3/4 of its length, at startup. I have installed the NVIDIA Web Driver (which is alternative to the one automatically installed by OS X). The problem persists until I reboot and restore the PRAM (cmd+option+P+R at startup), which basically means reverting back to the previous driver, which makes the NVIDIA gpu useless and the Mac only works with the Intel graphics card !

I read somewhere that High Sierra is the first Mac OS that sets 10bits for something related to the graphics (I am sorry to be this general, but I don't know more), while the Web Driver is still using 8bits, so this may cause the problem we are experiencing. I don't know how to set that value to test this out, so I can't be sure about this.

For now, I can't run any CUDA programs and my NVIDIA graphics card (GeForce GT 650M) can't be used by the system, although I can see it from System Report - Graphics/Display .

If anyone has a solution for this, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you, have a nice day.

They should definitely release a decent update, because this problem is consistent in many users! And clean install, reboot and all those other PRAM etc. restores does not solve the general problem! My MacBook is Mid 2014 and it is still a beast in terms of specs! It is absolutely insane that this stupid macOS is full of bugs and the Apple support have no clue what should they do!! People we must do something!

Check this, my login screen is not looking good (left side). I have also the blank screen with loading bar after logging in. When logged in, the desktop looks normal.

Also i had the problem with the Guest account, that i have already fixed.

Problem with the guest account is also happening at latest mac book pro 2017 of my collegue.

I'm missing the Nvidia Videocard at About My Mac window...

Energysaving window looks also not good.
