Photos crashing on people tab on High Sierra

Hi,

Since updating to MacOS 10.13 High Sierra, I was looking forward to finally sorting out all my faces (now "people") and having them sync across my devices.

I am using iCloud Photo Library and I had updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS 11 last week and it had already scanned my photo library and found some people, but not as many as I had already tagged in Mac Photos previously (when they did not sync).

Now, it seems Photo's had a hard time merging my previous faces with the new "people" and every time I go into most (but not all) people in the mac photos app, it just crashes.

Anyone had anything similar or know a fix?

Cheers,

Vinny

What fixed it for me (mid-2012 Retina MBP) was running a Photos library repair (hold control + option when opening Photos). It progressed through the repair in a few hours (~30k photos and videos), then stuck at 100% for 3 days, never formally finished, but I eventually forced quit (guidance from an AppleCare Photos rep), and I’ve had no issues since reopening Photos, no further crashing.

I tried this and it worked (so far)

  1. Hold down Option-Command while you open Photos.
  2. In the dialog that appears, click Repair to start the repair process.

WARNING!!!

1 - always backup prior to re[pairing a library - if the library has major problems the repair can make things worse

2 - remember that if you are using iCloud Photo Library doing a library repair will trigger a new total upload of all photos to iCloud which will take days or weeks and lots of internet bandwidth

So it is not dependent on the user library.

We have seen a few reports here, that a combination of the crop tool and the Curves adjustments can cause crashes in Photos. But for many people this is working well, so it could still be a problem with your user account or third-party software you installed.

  • To test, if the problem is not caused by settings in your user account, launch Photos from the guest user account and test there on a new library: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443
  • To test, if installed third-party is interfering, test in Safe Mode. The Mac will be terribly slow, but Safe-Mode will disable all third-party kernel extensions and clear some caches: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If Photos is still crashing in a new user account and even in Safe Mode, reinstall the system from the recovery partition. Photos can only be reinstalled by reinstalling the system. If your system should be inconsistent after a sequence of incremental updates, it frequently helps to reinstall from recovery. Just make a current backup, the start your Mac from the recovery partition by holding down ⌘R at start-up and select "Reinstall MacOS X". You do not need to wipe the the drive and make a clean install. Reinstalling from recovery will make a complete reinstall of the system, but leave the user data and applications installed.

is not working and I can't even force quit photos.

What happened, after you launched Photos? Did the application window open? Did Photos display any messages? What is the current state?

If Photos is still updating the library to the new format, let it run and do not interrupt it.

But if Photos should be just hanging and doing nothing, quit all other applications, then force restart the Mac by holding down the power button.

You can also use the Terminal and enter the command

killall Photos -9

This will send the signal -9 to the Photos.app and kill all processes immediately. But Photos will not have the chance to close any files. Use it only, if an application is hanging completely and cannot be terminated in any other way.

To find out, why Photos is hanging, test, if Photos can be launched if you use a different Photos library. Hold down the options key while launching Photos, until you are see ing the library chooser and create a small library for testing. Does Photos work on a new library?

Was playing phone tag with Apply Support and made contact this afternoon. My crash report data/diagnostic information was reviewed and apparently the new code within High Sierra exposed an issue with my video card - apparently also known as the GPU - and because it's on the logic board, the "engineers" who reviewed my crash report data/diagnostic information recommended I have my logic board replaced. I informed the tech others had reported problems with GPUs after updating to High Sierra, and others with similar and different machines were reporting the same issue. He’s going to go back to the “engineers” noting the other reports of GPU issues, and noting several threads are reporting on this issue.

Lastly, my Apple Support person emphasized that issues with High Sierra freezing their machines should be reported to Apple. So even if your machine is out of warranty like mine (yet less than a year and a half from purchase date), the more people report the issue, the more they can gain insight into the code within High Sierra that has suddenly rendered their machines to large paperweights.

and every time I go into most (but not all) people in the mac photos app, it just crashes.

Make a few tests, to narrow down the problem. It would help to know, if Photos is only crashing on your current user library or also on a new library created just for testing (see this help page: Create additional photo libraries - Apple Support). And test, if Photos is also crashing, if launched from different user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

I have not experienced any Photos 3.0 crashes when working with the People album, but I reset the album right from the start on all devices, after I upgraded to High Sierra and iOS 11. The reason I reset the People album were the many empty faces thumbnail in my people album. These had been caused by deleting automatically detected faces while still running ele Capitan and they were making a mess of the People album on sierra and High Sierra. After resttig the people album all was well. To reset the album I had to remove all named people from the People album and then a prompt appeared, asking if I want to reset all named faces.

I've not had that problem nor have I seen it posted here

please copy and post the first 100 or so lines of the crash report

and maybe giving Photos time to do its background uploads and scans will help - I suggest keeping the Mac powered and awake with Photos not running [not everyone agrees with this but I've found it works the best for me] for several days and see if that improves this

GPU is short for Graphics Processing Unit (graphics card).

When you tested in Safe Mode, the advanced features of the graphics processing unit have been disabled. Then a problem with the GPU is less likely.

Which Mac model are you using? Some MacBook Pros are having known problems with the graphics card, resulting in video problems, see, and there has been a replacement program: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Did you scroll to other images, this is where I find my problem.Three clicks to the right or left and boom it crashes.

I asked two second level AppleCare Techs to try the test on their computers ,result one pass one fail.

Just tried using Luminar extension and after importing file and scrolling to another image ,it crashed.
