High Sierra - DVD Player app - no sound?

Since upgrading to High Sierra, I've not been able to get audio output from the DVD Player app when playing (VIDEO_TS) folders. Home movies which previously played fine.

Another curious thing, is the volume slider for DVD Player is always set to minimum when I start the app.

In Preferences/Disc Setup my Audio output is set to 'System Sound Output'

I do not appear to be having issues with sounds or alerts in any other regard.

The VOB files (multiple titles) can be played in VLC Player and the audio plays fine there.

I have tried logging in under a new user account, and deleting the Settings folder in the Library for DVD Player. No positive results yet.

Anyone else having trouble or can verify that they are NOT having issues with DVD Player after upgrading?

I wish I had an answer for you, but I am also experiencing all of your reported symptoms. I was hoping there might be some hidden audio settings for DVD Player, but have not located any, even through MacPilot or TinkerTool. Again, like yourself, VLC works just fine. Looks like Apple has abandoned this software, just like iDVD, and, indeed, the hardware itself- the present DVD external drive remains at USB 2.0, and besides being over-priced, will also require an additional USB-C to USB-A adapter to function at all. Best option at this point is for all of us to abandon DVD Player, too.

I'm on an iMac, 2009 issue. So it might be an iMac issue. But, the present version of DVD Player is getting long in the tooth, so to speak. At any rate, it's useless for me presently. I tried discs and .iso and ripped Video TS files with no joy. It does seem like the audio hardware is not being addressed properly. If this were Windows, I'd be looking for drivers.

With more of our clients asking for things to be delivered on M-Disc DVDs (and Blu-rays) I was nervous when I read your post.

I tested a variety of sources and I'm getting perfect audio on OS 10.13.1 using Mac Pro silver towers. I've tried a couple of disk images, some studio released DVDs, as well as DVDs made here using iMovie HD 06 and Apple's iDVD.

A bit worried about the future regarding Apple's "DVD Player" it is still a 32-bit program! OS 10.14 will require all programs to be 64-bit. Hopefully, Apple will update DVD Player to a 64-bit program with OS 10.14. This would be easy for them to do.
