corrupted external (encrypted) apfs drive on High Sierra (17A365)

Im having trouble accessing data on my external USB disk - it just won't mount...

I get the prompt to unlock, which I do, but it does nothing...

(I should note that I don't actually remember being prompted to convert or encrypt this drive - it was originally non encrypted hfs+)

so Ive tried to access the data manually.

here are the commands I've tried:

MacBook-Pro:~ winston$ diskutil apfs list

I have a disk with the same situation, but it's an external one. It was encrypted with File Vault, and now is completely unreadable.

It doesn't mount, doesn't unmount, doesn't eject, and also freezes Disk Util whenever connected.

When plugged, it asks for the password twice (which is the same I use in a couple other external disks), and doesn't log in. 😟

Hello,

I am having a similar issue with my 10 TB drive.

After the volume was converted everything was fine the first time, however the second time it didn't mount and diskutil also isn't able to mount it manually.

Volume on disk4s2 failed to mount; it appears to be an APFS Volume which might be locked

Try "diskutil apfs unlockVolume"

Unlocking any cryptographic user on APFS Volume disk4s2

Error unlocking APFS Volume: The given APFS Volume is not encrypted (-69593)

however I'm able to mount the volume using sudo mount read-only, and then I can remount it read-write.

sudo mount -t apfs -r /dev/disk3s2 /Volumes/Pegasus

sudo mount -t apfs -w -o update /dev/disk3s2 /Volumes/Pegasus

not a fix of course, but at least I can get to my data until I figure out whats wrong.
