Thanks. Updating to the latest Chrome version fixed this.
I had the same problem and got help from Apple support who were very good. In the end the answer (for me) was uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. The links in Mail now open in Chrome again.
(Restart didn't work for me)
Turns out this was a problem with Chrome specifically. They recently released an update that addresses this issue. So either reinstall or update to the newest version to fix
Just happened to me. A simple restart of Chrome fixed this.
Yes, just cropped up a day ago. The restart worked.
When clicking a link in mail, a user expects it to open properly in their default browser. So when it does not do this, it is an incorrect result, thus a software bug. Everyone at my office has this problem too, and we all use the 'MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)'. Would like to see this resolved.
This happens to me all the time, lately, I think since I did my last update to 10.13.3...I have restart computer holding down whatever keys they recommend, but then it happens again if I quit and restart mail. A royal pain!

We have tried. If you want to report a bug please contact Apple. You posted in a user-to-user help community so it is not surprising that someone tried to help you.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem. You can use the Guest User or create a new User for testing.

FWIW, if I click on a link in a Mail message, Chrome opens to that URL, as does Safari or Firefox, depending on which browser is selected. Tried it on two different Macs running High Sierra. There doesn't appear to be a bug. It's likely local to your machine.
Try creating a new user account and test.

A "bug" is something that occurs because of improper coding. Something that occurs because of a software conflict or incompatible software is not.
Looks like restart resolved this one. Just talked to my colleague and he has the same issue. It is a bug if it happens - not a feature!
I updated Chrome (by going to the ... menu > help > about Google Chrome). The updater said I was "almost" up to date and asked me to relaunch the browser. Once I relaunched, the links from mail work just fine.
Is Chrome already open? If yes, look behind the main window to see if you see the link in it's own window.
If Chrome is quit, try opening then click on link in message.
Embedded links from Mail doesn't open on Chrome browser ( which is default)
