TextEdit & Preview Do Not Quit, and Run in Background – El Cap

Over several months I've experienced some odd symptoms such as lock-ups at Shut Down or an inability to Empty the Trash, receiving an error message stating the, "file (always a TextEdit or Preview file) was currently in use." Looking at the dock, I could see there were no apps active so this was puzzling. My reasonable assumption was that if there was no little black dot under an App in the Dock, then it was not open and active.

Recently, I had to Force-Quit an unrelated app and when I engaged the Force-Quit Window (⌘ + ⌥ + esc), I noticed that both TextEdit and Preview were listed in the Force-Quit menu/window, as if they were both open and active, when according to their icons in the Dock, they were not. If in fact, TextEdit and Preview had been running in the background even after they were "Quit", that would explain why I was not able to empty their files from the Trash.

That said, I often use the Automator App, "Quit All Applications" to quit all open apps which usually include TextEdit and Preview, so perhaps this Automator App does not completely Quit these particular Apps and leaves them running in the background. Seems like a bug to me.

My workaround is to simply Launch and then immediately Quit TextEdit and/or Preview manually. Doing so makes them disappear from the Force-Quit menu/window, but it's an annoying, seemingly unnecessary workaround. Now before every Shut Down, I either click (⌘ + Tab) or engage the Force-Quit Menu/Window to make sure TextEdit and Preview are no longer open and active. Since doing this I have not had any Shut Down lock-ups. I also now know to manually launch and immediately quit TextEdit and/or Preview if unable to empty their files from the Trash.

It would appear this problem goes back to earlier iterations of OS X as noted here. I would hope Apple would take the initiative to correct this bug. Does anyone else experience and/or have a permanent fix for this issue? Please bear in mind that I did a clean install of El Capitan on this MBPro and other than this glitch, I enjoy a very healthy and robust user account with this latest version of El Capitan 10.11.6.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), null

Get in the explicit habit of closing the specific document in the Preview and TextEdit File menu, before quitting. Do not presume that clicking the red traffic light in the open document title bar will quit either application.

Failing to formally close a document in Preview, or TextEdit, before quitting will leave a backgrounded process with that document open, and its file in use bit still set.

VOSX... I never click a red traffic light to close a document with the expectation that that will also quit the app. I always either type (⌘ + Q) or use the Automator applet, "Quit All Applications". That said, I believe I have at times, quit TextEdit or Preview with their documents still open on the desktop. I if understand you correctly, you're saying that it's imperative to make sure all of an App's open file windows have been closed before quitting the App. I'll make sure I do that and see if that solves the problem. Thanks!
