iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

So far, the whole iPhone 6/6S users worldwide are NOT all having issues with iOS 11.

There is ONLY is small minority of iPhone 6/6S users reporting major slowdown issues with iPhone 6/6S.

If every single iPhone 6/6S user was having issues with iOS 11, these support communities would be full of more angry and upset users, like you.

This is simply NOT the case.

Every single worldwide iDevice user loads up their iDevices with lots of different apps and things that can cause different things to happen to any iDevice.

Apple does not and will not ever test for every possible user configuration.

There is NO way to ever be able to do that!

Do you always do your iOS app upgrades/updates over the air via WiFi or do you connect your iDevices to iTunes on a computer?

The most reliable way to make sure ANY iOS upgrade/update goes as smoothly and error free as possible is to do upgrades/updates through connecting an iDevice to a computer using iTunes.

WiFi data transfer can and has introduced errors in the transmission of data from time to time and large data transfers, like major iOS upgrades can have the possibility to introduce data errors during such a large iOS upgrade packet.

If you have the option to use iTunes to do ANY upgrade/update, then use the iTunes option.

I have never, EVER had any issues with any iOS upgrade/update going through iTunes on a computer.

That thoroughly stated,

Have you tried installing the latest iOS 11.1.2?

Yes I understand your solution, but it isn’t an acceptable one. There are tons of info and customisation in system settings :

All the app custom hardware access authorisation, custom notification display, and so on.

It’s just not acceptable to do that. If at least Apple had a tool to export and import such system settings.

It seems to be an even worst problem that when we where managing system extensions under MacOS 7/8/9 disabling all of them and restarting hundred times enabling a new one to see which was crashing the system at boot.

The only difference is that here it’s all opaque, we don’t know what is the one system setting that makes the iPhone slow.

And I guess taking a brand new iPhone 6 device and restoring my full backup will just make this one slow too if it’s really system setting related.

(I wish I could have. A tool like top/monitor activity, to see on which process the cpu cycle or I/Os are wasted)

FYI,

I have an iPod Touch 6th gen, which is near functionally equivalent to an iPhone 6, without the phone part and it is running fine on all of the various updates of iOS 11.

Haven’t updated to the latest iOS 11.1.2 because it was specifically for an iPhone issue which I don’t think will benefit my iPod Touch 6th gen.

Does Apple read that? All my friends who use iPhones are shocked with this trash update that came with ios 11. Personally, that helped me to make a decision: I'll wait a bit to see if apple intentionally decided to **** up peoples' phones with ios11 update and won't fix all the huge problems that came with it. If it's not going to be fixed, I won't update to Iphone X, I'll just go with galaxy s8 instead. I don't want to fund this kind of enterprise.

I would like to report my experience related to the same issue.

I've an Iphone 6 64 GB. After upgrade it became really slow, consider that it takes about 10 or more seconds to start the camera and be ready to shot a picture.

I had the problem since i've installed IOS 11 , i can confirm that with IOS 11.1.2 it is still slow.

I performed a factory reset to the device in order to exclude problems related to space / app and so on...

It is the same. no change also without installing anything.

I used the passmark app and I compared my benchmark with the one of another Iphone 6 64GB with the same ios installed and I discovered that my iphone has lower benchmark index (about one half).

I think that there are some problem regarding flash memory performance and the new IOS has highlighed this difference

Also,

Have any of you tried a hard reset of your iPhone 6/6S by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons

In Settings app, General settings panel, turn OFF Background App Refresh.

In Settings app, under General settings, Reset panel, at the right bottom of the list, Reset All Settings.

In Settings app (NOT from the iOS Control Panel) turn OFF Bluetooth when not using any Bluetooth devices.

iOS has a issue/bug with just simply turning on/off Bluetooth and WiFi using the iOS Control Panel

Also, in general, if you want a faster IDevice, on all of my iDevices, I turn off most of the iOS motion graphics eye candy, by simply turning ON Reduce Motion in Settings app, General, Accessibilty settings.

If none of this, so far, has helped your iPhone 6,/6S,

What about doing a complete backup to iCloud or iTunes on a computer, then do a complete erase and reset as new in the Settings app under General, Reset then restore your backup from iCloud or iTunes?

MichelPM: Thanks for posting the detailed suggestions. My apologies to Lawrence. Update: I own an iPhone 6 Plus, 64GB with over 25GB free. I followed the same instructions above, which were provided by Apple Support tech during a service call. I performed a complete Erase all setting and content, restored the phone to native settings, and used the phone for several hours. The phone appeared to work nearly as well as when it was new, free of 3rd party apps, no addtional email accounts, Bluetooth turned off, and Background App Refresh disabled. Then I performed a backup from iCloud. The phone began performing poorly within a few hours of the restore. Disheartened, I threatened to throw the phone away. My wife owns an iPhone 6 128Gb and just recently updated to 11.2 without any noticeable issue. I drew a long, deep breath and began uninstalling 3rd party apps. After removing thirty some apps and the Xfinity WiFi Hotspot app (big suspect), I performed a reset. Since then, my phone is behaving fairly well, with only a slight, but tolerable lag - a little delay in opening mail and iMessaging. I'm sure I left out a few details, but I wanted to share this experience, to offer some hope for those who want their phones to work, and who don't want to resort to extreme measures. I can assume that at least one, and quite likely more apps are not optimized to utilize the OS upgrades, and will cause issues. If I discover any specific app that causes issues, I'll post here. In the meantime, I'll begin planning and budgeting for an iPhone upgrade. I wish my phone would last several more years, but that isn't the paradigm in which I live; unless I want to go back to the glorious flip-phone! I appreciate all the comments and postings related to this thread. One last comment: I wish Apple chose to deliver an optional upgrade without requiring everyone to accept the upgrade path. Good luck, all.

Have you tried re-installing those apps you deleted, one at a time, testing the iPhone 6 for awhile as you go?

That would pin down what apps were causing the issues.

Also, it is very good to maintain, AT THE VERY LEAST, 3-4 GBs of free data storage space!

Don’t ever let your iDevices start dipping below 2-3 GBs of free data storage space, too!

iOS or any computer operating system needs a certain percentage of free data storage space to operate nominally and properly.

You don’t need a new iPhone IF you don’t load up your iDevice to the point where it no longer operates properly.

Also, anyone with 16 GBs iDevice only REALLY have 8-9 GBs, or so, of real, usable free data storage space.

"Hi there

There will be a fix soon, iOS 11.1 is currently in beta, so hopefully that'll fix some issues you might be having.

You can still restore your device to iOS 10"

ya.. unfortunately there's no fix yet.
The iphone 6s became slow and buggy, and it eats up the battery twice as fast.

I guess the only fix from apple would be "to buy a new iphone8 or X", right?
