iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

FYI for everyone here in this thread post.

In addition to all of the possible fixes and solutions presented another iPhone 6S user, in another single posting here,

suggested to go into Settings, General, Accessibility, Increase Contrast and turn ON Reduce Transparency.

Your iPhone 6/6S won’t look as pretty, but that user reported that his iPhone 6/6S speed improved considerably.

In addition, I have been advising in the Settings app, under General, turning ON Reduced Motion.

Good Luck to ALL!

Hello All, Has anyone contacted Apple Support regarding this issue? I recently used the Chat option because I'm getting frustrating with this issue. If anyone has, I would like to hear your thoughts.

In the meantime, I got so frustrated with the chat and the response I received from one of the technicians I thought I would share the transcript with you all. I know some of you may frown, disapprove or think it may be wrong to post the transcript but have a read and let me know if you think this is right. Only my full name has been edited.

Kaleigh

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. My name is Kaleigh. How can I help you?

Kaleigh

Hey Lloyd, hope you’re well! What could I help you with?

Lloyd

Hi, Ever since upgrading to iOS 11.1.2 my iPhone 6 has been very slow when opening apps and general typing.

Kaleigh

Oh no! That’s not good. I would be worried if I was experiencing this system issue as well. I’ll be more than happy to try and help you with this today.

Kaleigh

Do you mind if I ask you a couple questions before we dive into some troubleshooting steps here?

Lloyd

go ahead but i can guarantee toy troubleshooting will come to a dead end.

Kaleigh

Ok, in that case would you like to see a technician?

Kaleigh

Let me know what I can do to help you out today.

Lloyd

its not a hardware issue. its software related to the recent release of iOS

Lloyd

Have a look at the support forum and you can see many people have this issue

Kaleigh

Ok, give me a moment and I will look into my resources here for you.

Kaleigh

Just another brief moment here, is that okay?

Lloyd

yup

Kaleigh

Thanks, I appreciate your patience.

Kaleigh

I have a senior advisor Drew here who would be happy to take over, is it ok to transfer?

Lloyd

yes that is ok. thanks

Kaleigh

No problem!

Drew

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. My name is Drew. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Drew

Hello Lloyd, I hope you’re doing well here today. I understand that we’re having some issues with your iPhone here since updating to the newest ios

Lloyd

Hi Drew, I am well thanks. Yourself?

Lloyd

yes I am experiencing some issue since upgrading to iOS 11.1.2

Drew

I’m glad to hear you’re doing well! Will be doing better once we get your iPhone figured out here!

Drew

Perfect so we know you’re up to date — were you experiencing issues prior to the ios 11.1.2 (ie on other versions of the ios)

Lloyd

I hope so Drew. No, I was not experiencing issues before the update. Instant regret as soon as I did update.

Drew

Understandable — let’s see what we can get figured out here first! The first thing that I want to do is look under the hood of your device. This diagnostic will allow me to check over the hardware and software and get a grip on what’s going on internally. Would you like to run that with me now?

Lloyd

Yes that would be great but I am typing this on my MacBook not the iPhone.

Drew

No problem at all! To set that up, can you please go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics you should then see in blue something that says Share Diagnostic Information with Apple. Tap that and then agree to the terms and conditions. I’ll start the check in about 30 seconds. If you don’t see that option, please hang out in the menu as it may take a moment to ask you to start the test with us. — if you don’t see it pop up right away, please go back one settings page and then back into the diagnostics

Lloyd

There is share iphone analyst, Analyst data, Start Diagnostics With Apple Support, Share iCloud Analyst or Share with App Developers.

Drew

Start please

Lloyd

started

Drew

Looks like it’s running here

Drew

Thanks for your patience Lloyd!

Drew

I have good news I know what all is going on with your iPhone here

Drew

IT shows that your battery is in need of service and would certainly explain the issues you’ve been going through

Lloyd

if that is the case, then why are so many people experiencing the same thing? Coincidence or Apple trying to get more money out of people? I bet you're going to suggest booking into a Genius bar next to get my battery replaced?

Drew

That is going to be our next step. A lot of times the battery through use becomes consumed. They’re designed for 500 cycle counts. When they fail it can cause system wide issues with the hardware not getting the power they need to work properly

Drew

Given the enhancements provided by the ios updates that can bring the issues to light

Drew

Your diagnostics did come back with the battery itself being failed which does indicate that it needs to be looked at by a technician here.

Lloyd

.... plus now I think about it. My battery had been working well and lasting a substantial length of time before the update!

Drew

I understand how it can be perceived like that for sure. I can assure you that the update itself would not cause a battery to come back reporting failed for any reason unless the issue was there previously. If you confirm your postal code, I would be delighted to get you set up with a local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for further assistance

Lloyd

at what cost?

Drew

For your phone itself service would start at £79 including the VAT. You can view complete details of repair pricing and services athttps://support.apple.com/en-gb/iphone/repair/service/pricing

Lloyd

No, that is absolutely disgraceful. I believe this issue has been caused by the iOS update, and like you said - the new update can bring issues to light. Issues that weren't there before?

Drew

I can see where you’re coming from there, again the issue would have been persistent prior to the update. It would not have been caused by the update itself as the battery itself is showing failed. These issues progress over time and continually do get worse left unchecked.

Drew

Our options today to get you fixed up here would be to work with a local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store as the hardware is reporting an issue. This would be our best way to get you fixed. If you would like to confirm your postal code, I would be delighted to go over those service options with you.

Lloyd

The conclusion I have here is that Apple are intentionally 'breaking' their customers devices by pushing through untested software to do so. Software that users have no option to downgrade to a last known working version.

Lloyd

I work in an IT environment and if my department pushed through untested releases in the live environment, causing other issues someone's head would be on the chopping block.

Drew

Lloyd, while you may draw that conclusion that’s certainly not the case. It would be a poor business choice to intentionally write software to damage user’s devices. That would not be prudent at all for the long term name of the company. If you’re not wanting to set up service now I can certainly understand and would encourage you to chat back when you’re ready or visithttps://locate.apple.com

Lloyd

My customers wouldn't be happy at all!!

Drew

As we’ve gone over I understand and have logged down your issues with the service here. As the phone itself shows failed hardware which has been existing on the device and was not caused by the ios update our options today to resolve this case is to set up service.

Drew

As you’re declining to set up service at this time, I would encourage you to chat back with us and we’d be happy to set up service or please visithttps://locate.apple.comto find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store

Drew

You’re also welcome to send feedback directly tohttps://www.apple.com/feedback

Drew

I would be glad to set up service today with you, if not, I will go ahead and release the chat in 20 seconds and wish you a marvelous evening

Drew

Ending now, have a great night Lloyd!

Sincerely,
Apple Support

Suffice to say, the conversation was ended before I could ask any further questions or get any further support. I don't understand why my batter life was absolutely perfect before the update to iOS 11.1.2. Only within the past few days I've noticed that it drains rather quickly when connected to the Wifi. However, surprisingly the battery life is rather good on BlueTooth! Usually this is quite the opposite! I would really like to hear your feedback on this as I think Apple has some responsibility to their customers.

They ran a remote diagnostic and it was determined that your battery needs to be replaced. You were repeatedly asked if you wanted them to help you set up an appointment to have the phone looked at. They can't fix hardware over the phone.

Nov 30, 2017 1:37 PM in response to IdrisSeabright

I'm willing to bet It's not a hardware or battery issue. Look at all the people who have posted problems with their iPhone 6's since this update was released. If anything, the update is causing battery problems, not the other way around. It may also be a ploy to generate phone sales as it coincides with 2 new phone models being released. The only way this gets fixed is to have a group of attorneys contact Apple to explain our concerns.

Nov 30, 2017 1:40 PM in response to Zarbon2005

You'd be amazed at what a battery replacement will do.

After a sw update, backup, and other particular changes, it's normal for the battery to act out of sorts for a while.

However, it appears your battery was to a point already in which it needed to be repaired.

It's a good thing he ran diagnostics for you; now you may find resolution

Many users are on here with all models noting system-wide issues, and a new battery has been the primary cause. Replacing theirs has helped them and many others

Best of luck

Yes they did ask to set up an appointment. I do not think this is hardware, replacing the battery wouldn't make any difference. It was working OK before the update. Why has it suddenly diminished after updating?

If you're going to ask experts for help, it makes sense to take the advice they give you. There is such a thing as co-incidence (and confirmation bias).

There are no more than the average number of people complaining. Most of the iPhone 6's out there are coming up on when they would need to have a battery replaced. But, it's your choice to either keep coming up with conspiracy theories or to do something constructive.

On this instance I don't think this is clear evidence to replace the battery - Apple or Android.

What about updating the BIOS on some laptops to prolong battery life or better battery performance? Same thing on a mobile device don't you think?

A battery test is straightforward and very reliable. There is a chip in the battery. All the test does is ask that chip "How are you feeling today?" If you want a 2nd opinion, get the app Battery Life. It does a pretty good job of testing the battery also.

Uh, IdrisSeabright - there are 24 pages ⚠ of complaints on this one issue since this update was released in October. That's one heck of a coincidence. Time to step back and get some perspective. Either there is an Apple-created software issue which needs to be fixed or they sell more batteries and/or phones. It's pretty easy math.

I am the one with perspective. Twenty-four pages of a lot of the same people posting (and one very long cut and paste) is not that many people. If wouldn't be a significant percentage of iPhone 6 users even if every person posting was unique. At any given time, there are lots of iPhone batteries reaching the end of their useful life. For some of them, that happens around the same time as an update.

Nov 30, 2017 2:01 PM in response to Zarbon2005

The diagnostics are true and valid; thus, you have clear evidence

They also run a full mobile diagnostic on your device which doesn't just show the battery but any and all issues that may or may not be present in your system

Apple Support doesn't run false diagnostic systems nor issue false reports; if so, that tech would get walked right out the door and not allowed back in. The results come straight from your device that you selected to run with the tech

Any preventative measures for a battery can certainly be taken on the user end
