iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

Hey Serolio,

After upgrading to the latest IOS over the Xmas, my iPhone 6 is behaving ridiculously badly. Basically, it freezes on and off, and when you press any of the apps different apps open up, you click on settings but different menus appear. In other words it's not only slow but acts on frolics of it's own.

I suspect Apple have done some sort of a fix to slow down the battery (as admitted by Apple already) for the "better" customer experience but in fact not only they've fed my phone with dodgy virus to slow down the battery but messed up the entire phone's software working system. The phone became totally unusable. It just shows one thing and how unscrupulous Apple are - they want us to buy a new phone that is well overpriced and technologically behind their rivals on price, quality and honesty.

I have applied the fix as per your advice in the post, however, this is my result:

1. It does initially speed up the phone as it clears a lot of unwanted settings

2. The apps and buttons behave in an unexpected manner - don't open up or load after few minutes when not required, open links that are not needed, etc... Nothing materially changed since applying the fix as far as those problems concerned.

All I can say at this stage to whoever wants to apply this fix is - DO NOT BOTHER, it will not fix the issue nor remove the VIRUS that the Apply have implanted in your handset. All I can think of at this stage is going to the Apple store and ask them to fix it (hopefully free of charge), and failing that join the others affected by the issue to take class action against the disgraceful company.

In any case, I suspect after this experience, it'll be my last iPhone ever. I'll be switching to android phone (possibly Samsung) as my trust in Apple's products and services are permanently broken.

For those suffering from poor or suboptimal performance after migrating their old device to iOS 11, it seems that the best practical solution is to have the battery replaced by a new one (this should be possible in an Apple Store). Then iOS 11 will notice that the battery is new and will not slowdown the processor. This is what I have read on multiple geek forums. Now the question is whether Apple will improve its communication towards custand also whether it will cover the cost of replacing the battery for devices which are more than 1 year old.

The only way they could save themselves and their customers is to cover the cost of the new battery replacement.

This is a terrible mistake on their part simply due to lack of testing their new iOS on all their devices so they could plan and mitigate these issues. Certainly says something about the poor quality of the Snr Managers and Test and QA managers at Apple now. Jump ship before it sinks. I'm ready for my New Google Pixel 2!

Ciao. Seems the grass is much greener on the other side. Apple is years behind in their phone handset advancements bringing no new innovation and for a premium cost. Sorry a talking poo emoji doesn't cut it for me. As an iphone proponent for years, I watch the iphone X launch like and sat their dumbfounded that they had nothing new to offer that wasn't already on the market.... a sad demise for apple over the next 5years it will be.

Despite what some have said here, the following extract from Apple's apology would indicate that they do listen to and read feedback from users (whether here on this forum or from official feedback channels). Regardless, these issues are picked up by the wider press.

I think it is a testament to the users who have made their opinions known and raised these performance issues that Apple are now going to reduce the cost of the battery replacements from the iPhone 6 phone and up - so perseverance has resulted in a partial result.🙂

"They won't stand behind their screwing us."

What makes you say this ? We all know what happened and Apple admitted our collective analysis, namely: a change introduced in iOS11 gradually reduces the frequency of the CPU of the phone if the battery is detected as approaching end of life (2 years+, 500 cycles+). It does so to prevent the abrupt shutdowns of the phone that would happen even when the battery seemed to be sufficiently loaded. The effect is really to extend the useful life of your battery. This has all to do with the chemistry of batteries: they decay over time. The batteries in your radio decay. The battery in your watch decay. The battery in your car decays. It's a fact of life. Maybe future developments in battery technology will improve their lifetime ... What this is really all about is a PR failure for Apple.

"The only fix will be to buy a new iPhone."

That is blatantly false. You just need to replace the battery. And after all the hoopla, Apple agreed to replace them at a fraction of the cost. Also a planned iOS update should make the throttling optional, or maybe less aggressive (speculating here).

Yes and no.

I have an almost brand new replacement iPhone 6 Plus. With a battery of great quality (also according to test apps) and iOS 11 is still slow. Yupp.

I have clearad as much space as I can, deleting apps and app data, reset system settings, used cleaning app (heck, it was worth a try), turned of analytics, etc. Still my system takes up more than a third of my storage and... yes, iOS 11 is still slow, crashy and buggy. Perhaps a tiny better than before I did, but still sliper than iOS 10.

But I have hope. I hope. Can’t afford new phone.

Me to. Just install 11.2.1. I was forced to update from a perfectly good working fast iPhone 6 on IOS 10x to protect myself from this new “meltdown” cpu issue. What a freakin disaster. EVEYTHING is like molasses. Takes forever to do anything. Did the update via hardware thru iTunes in MBP and still slowed phone to almost useless. No wifi courption possible so must be Apple slowing this phone 6 on purpose.

Apple your gonna pay for this !

To say this problem is “solved” blatantly ignores the facts. Ever since updating to IOS 11 (currently on 11.2.2) I’ve experienced extremely slow speeds on everything from text messaging to safari to Siri. Apps close repeatedly, Siri takes more than 3 seconds to respond, and some sights and apps are completely unusable. My battery life and performance was great beforehand, and now my phone feels like a paperweight. Using my iPad mini from 2014 feels like light speed compared to the iPhone 6. Please help, don’t just call it solved.

Look, I don't want to pay this company 29 dollars, I don't want to give them even a dollar. I never asked for this nonsense, I was never given the choice to opt out, Apple did not bother telling me what, apart from "bug fixes", "stability improvement" and the usual mantra, I was downloading (the company no longer bothers even telling me how many MBs or GBs a download will be). I cannot understand how anyone can be an apologist for this sort of behavior.

Jan 13, 2018 5:38 PM in response to El Paso Steve

Btw. if I sell you something at an agreed price, and then lower the value of your purchased product, this is nothing short of theft. If I offer you a partial remedy of this (no guarantees for you, though) if you shed additional bug, I am only adding offense to the injury. I used to love Apple for its innovation and design. Now I hate it and wish and hope maliciously that France and other EU countries will sanction it into bankruptcy. Thieves should not prosper.

I have had my battery changed, the CPU is back to normal speeds and the phone is finally usable.

But it is still noticeably slower than it was with ios 10: it cannot even handle typing smoothly as I am writing this, Siri takes forever to answer, fast forwarding podcasts sometimes rewinds instead or vice versa, the phone freezes for 10 seconds every time a youtube video ends, and the list goes on and on.

IOS 11 is an absolute disaster which should have never been released in the current state, or at least not for devices which cannot handle it properly.

I payed 1000€ for this device not 3 years ago, I will not be conviced that it not being able to handle normal use is normal.

My gf's galaxy s6 flies like the first day, my 6y old PC runs like a charm with the latest windows 10, and my 1000€ 3y old iphone (with a new battery) runs noticeably worse than my mom's 150€ xiaomi.

I pay extra to Apple PRECISELY to not have to go through this kind of cr*p...

No more, android it is.
