iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

I wonder what is so essential in iOS11 that couldn't be turned off for the iPhone 6, it worked perfectly well with iOS10, so there is no reason why it couldn't be so under IOS11. Mine is now pretty useless, I can type faster than it can display what I type, etc... I won't upgrade, this after owning a 3, 3GS, 2x4S, 2x6, 2xiPad, 1xMac Mini, 2xMacBooks, 1xWatch, 1xAppleTV... It must be possible to release an iOS update to fix this properly !!!

Sure, I could have avoided the update altogether, although I was prompted while running a GPS navigation app and driving. It was raining, dark and late so not an ideal time to look at what it was asking me to do (not that it would have been safe any other time anyway), so I inadvertently asked the phone to update later and woke up to a new iOS and very slow iPhone6.

The irony being that in the morning, it told me of a new iOS11 feature that could disable notifications while driving...

Apple, time to fix this or I could be tempted back to Android and giving up my app developper account. Honestly... you can do better than this.

Have 8 members in my family with iPhone 7’s all updated to OS11.2.1 and now all running slow as molasses. Way to **** off a whole lot of users Apple! We own Apple desktops, laptops, my office is all Apple, now a significant number of family members and friends who are Apple users are talking about migrating to Samsung Android. Apple better come up with a solution and quick! Class action suits are already in the works.

My iPhone 6 Plus has 128GB memory and was replaced only a couple of months ago under warranty worth a new one. It was working perfectly wonders, but then hastened the iOS upgrade (sorry it was the downgrade to stone ages) and all **** broke loose, the phone is now useless brick.

Apple has admitted deliberately slowing down old phones, and Law suit is already progressed:

Yes! They should all sue and demand their rights for their phones to shut down unexpectedly. That's clearly better than a slowdown. Sue, sue, sue. I'm sure that there are enough schlock lawyers willing to take the case.

The problem is, many of us did not have any problems with our phones before iOS 11 came out. My phone was not shutting down spontaneously. Then Apple released the "fix" and my phone is very slow and unpleasant to use.

Maybe Apple helped the 10% of the people who were experiencing shutdowns, but they hurt everyone else.

Couldn't agree more. Called Apple yesterday after several freeze episodes. Got passed around for 45 minutes to 5 different people. Honestly, they were more concerned about finding system issues within Apple than fixing my phone issues. Never admitted that there is a growing outcry from dedicated Apple customers like me. This being my 3rd call they wanted me to invest 2-3 more hours by going to the Apple store for a more 'extensive' diagnostic - I refused and shamed them - they know what is happening. The engineers seem oblivious to this forum conversation and its now 40 pages (though it was 58 yesterday...hmmm.) This is either a testament to their acting abilities or their dysfunction. I hope its the former. There is a lot of information manipulation going on here to protect the Apple core it seems...

Uboat - I share your frustrations. Went through many hours with Apple help online. When I discovered my phone was covered for a free battery replacement (found that out through reddit) I bit the bullet and went to the Store for an appointment. The in store diagnostics are done on wifi right there in front of you - not sure why your phone needs to be on premises to get a wifi diagnostic. Anyway my battery was almost done. After they replaced my battery my phone would not power up so they gave me a new phone.

High 'level' posters here with high 'points' insisted there was no way updates were slowing phones - they were wrong. Sort of exposes this forum as of limited value for technical advise. The store and reddit were the most helpful things for me. My experience at the retail store was sooo much better than online and nothing like the interactions on these forums.

Philly_Phan, Apple has already admitted that their iOS updates contained code that slowed down older phones so don't you think it's time to give up the ghost?

As best I can tell, Apple hasn't said any more than what they've been saying, that, if the battery is old, in certain circumstances, iOS will throttle the processor to prevent shut downs. This was announced months ago.

Apple advisors are not given any information unless it is valid and made public by Apple for release. They find out about the latest updates, etc when everyone else does to prevent miscommunication and for all practical purposes. They simply have a broader base of user feedback as that's what they work on each day and night. But, no - they are on equal ground for release of info by Apple

The software engineers don't visit this site. They get their feedback via the appropriate link and via techs through the appropriate channels.

The info here cannot be considered credible as anyone can state anything plus each case and device is truly unique, to put it very simply.

Anyhow. You all have a happy holiday season ☺

I completely agree. Apple has screwed up big time and no innovation since Steve is gone. They are upsetting consumers now by slowing their phones down. These consumers were loyal and now have no loyalty.

My entire company of iPhone 6 are moving to Google Pixel 2 phones. They should have done more testing and not allowed iPhone 6 or 7 to update.

Sorry Apple but your going downhill and fast!!!

Time for consumers to jump ship before it sinks!

It’s too bad apple decided to slow down their phones when updating. The single reason I am willing to pay a premium for an IPhone is because in the past it didn’t slow down after a year or two or three. Typically I didn’t keep my phones longer than two years anyway.

As a result, I am not willing to pay a premium for an iPhone and with many more options with android phones and better price points, there is no reason for me to stay with Apple. Too bad so sad.
