High Sierra Destroys FAT32

So I upgraded two of my computers on the day High Sierra was released. Then, today, I upgrade a third computer to High Sierra. It's a Mac Mini. I didn't have enough space on the Mac Mini, so I copied some of my movies to a FAT32 formatted external hard drive to free up some space. Then I installed it.

My primary computer is a MacBook Pro with Retina display, released in 2013. Just today, all of a sudden I noticed that I could not copy a 2 GB file to my external hard drive (it's a 2 TB drive, with about 800 GB of free space). I noticed that this same thing happened on the other computer I had upgraded on High Sierra's release - an iMac.

When I had regular Sierra installed, I had no problems copying files between 1 GB and 4 GB to the hard drive (I am aware of the limitations of FAT32. All of the files I am attempting to copy are well below 4 GB).

I have an old Windows laptop that has no problems copying 2 GB files to the hard drive, so it's not the drive's format. I cannot reformat the hard drive. I had no problems using it before High Sierra, so I shouldnt have to. I am not concerned with spelling or punctuation at this time, as i'm close to having a nervous breakdown right nwo. Reformatting the drive is out of the questions, as I have too much important data on it.

I have the same problem too.

BUT! If you don't use Finder, instead use Terminal for copying files it works! I realized it when I couldn't get my files copied, but when I did my backup it went through. (and I know that my backup software is using Terminal commands)

For copying in Terminal see: https://developer.apple.com/legacy/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPag es/man1/cp.1.html

Or type in, in the Terminal "man cp".

Basically it is: "cp source_file target_file"

Adam, I posted "This appears to be fixed now on 10.13.4."

Which part of "10.13.4" did you not understand?

The whole point of my previous post was to let people (who are a part if this thread) know that the latest update to High Sierra (13.10. FOUR) has actually fixed this ongoing error in Finder in High Sierra.

Turns out that Apple DO actually get round to fixing stuff IF they get enough FEEDBACK - https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos.html - (rather than people just b*tching in forums).

I followed earlier advice and customized Archive Utility to uncompress files to the USB Fat32 drive. You can find it under Applications/Utilities on High Sierra. Once you launched it, go into Archive Utility > Preferences and choose your drive under the "Save Expanded Files:". Once your USB Fat32 drive is selected, go to File > Expand Archive and find your archived file...it will uncompress to the USB drive with no issue, assuming its uncompressed file size is 4GB or less.

waste of time been complaining about this since the first Beta release of High Sierra and have been totally ignored since just install Commander one.

it caused me a lot of problems at first when i was moving some large files 2gb-2.5gb from some flash drives unfortunately exfat is not fully supported on some devices (but it works on files over 2GB) however Commander one works and its better than finder its now my default i am kinda glad Apple allowed this bug to drag on or i wouldn't have known about Commander one's software 😉

So, how many months in with this new OS and no solution for this problem?

This feels like a d&¢k move from a company we all love, to force new tech down it's users throats, i don't believe some programmer at apple HQ just made a mistake and inadvertently changed the limits on the file format.

This is not a bug, otherwise it would be random, i have 3 apple computers, MB air, mac mini and a mb pro, and this issue is present on all three. i don't want 3rd party software to manage my files, i want a proper patch from the company i trusted to fix this. It is a shame that apple has not addressed this problem sooner.

it's not a bug correct! it seems this is how it is now with the new APFS finder will not copy or move any file of 2GB and over (under 4GB) to a FAT32 formatted USB/HD/SD etc just refuses and has done this since the first beta of High Sierra i can only format the drives to exfat or use "commander one" they have never ever contacted me about this and i imagine others also! i reported it before i saw any others complain via the internet or google searches!

only now it's coming to light from other uses.

well i noticed its not fixed on the latest 10.13.4 too and i just bought a 2017 MacBook pro (still boxed up) to replace my 2014 (thats still perfect) and i slightly regret getting one been holding off for a while because of issues (2016) what with hardware issues and software issues i have already moved away from iPhones i was debating on a dell XPS that for me i never thought i would......

I am thinking of jumping ship as well whoever is in charge has let the quality of apple fall so far behind now. I used to be a strong supporter of apple and willing to pay a premium for a quality product. It now apple products are not quality anyone. They spend more money on image than the quality of their products. When I upgrade I will not be upgrading with apple unless their quality improves significantly

well this may have been said before but since the death of steve jobs i felt this is the way Apple's products would go

eventually just look at the changes with product lines and beta testing etc etc....Apple cannot sustain selling premium priced products while not giving premium quality as people will eventually get tired and move on and Apple will eventually be just another tec company with the likes of Samsung and Microsoft taking first position.

Apple is moving further away from the company it once was when under Steve Jobs.

2 days i have had a brand new 15" 2017 MacBook pro (higher spec one) in its box and still not sure if to return it....

they cannot keep removing functionality and expect people to keep paying more for less......

this is my point..... i wouldn't ever give Dell/Windows a second thought but i did that says something..... but with the amount of issues i heard surrounding the 2016 MacBook pro speakers blowing out ,keyboard issues, hinges issues etc

are they really worth double the price of Window machines in the quality department even though they have issues i would have thought Apple's products would have been less with better QC. when paying £2700 seriously there not just software bugs either...
