I think I found where the issue is. WindowServer on High Sierra seems to leak memory quite fast when Scaled resolutions are used. This is with both internal retina display and external display. Specially with 4K displays. With internal retina and scaled resolution the memory leak seems to be quite moderate and you probably get only one freeze per day. But with attached 4K display WindowServer seems to leak memory as fast as 0.2GB/10min and grows beyond some limit quite fast.

Setting all display resolutions to "default" solves the problem. I guess nobody at Apple QA runs scaled displays.

I can't say much more than we tried every avenue except reading the logs. This may have located the issue but was beyond me. The WD drive is working fine after I reformatted it and now use it as an additional backup. The fault seems to have been in a file dealing with Time Machine backups. More than that I cant say. The only other thing I know for sure is that it started after the download of HS. A full reinstall is not without risk but Apple talked me thru it so as not lose all my language files.

Same issue here. When I connect or disconnect from my external monitor (either LG 5K or Apple thunderbolt) it hangs and needs hard reboot.

It also happens if you open or close the clamshell while connected to external monitor. The screen may become black or red and hangs for ever....

Big problem for professionals that take their laptop back and forth from home to continue working....

Exactly how I feel about. Sometime I can go for hours with no lock-ups and just when I think the problem has been worked out, it hangs again. I often hangs when idle so right now I have automatic Time Machine backups disabled. I might try using on instead of two monitors after the next freeze. Before this my Mac Pro was very stable.

I've done everything. Nothing works!

the easiest way to replicate the problem is to connect with an external screen and open/close the clamshell.

Beta 5 did not fix the issue....

Take this and save yourself some time...

Remember that once you install beta you cannot go back! If something goes wrong you are on your own until full 10.13.1 is out.

I commiserate that no proposed solution works. Some things seem to reduce the frequency of freezes. Even so, I get exactly the same freezes running the beta.

A positive reason to run the beta is that it comes with the beta feedback reporting tool. After a crash you can write up the problem and it collects log and diagnostic files to send back to Apple. In that way I feel like I am helping somewhat. I am not suggesting anyone install the beta, but if you did it might help to report your crashes using that tool.

Honestly, I am going to park my Mac Pro and work off my MacBook Air to the extent possible while waiting for a resolution.

Note to Self: Next fall, don't install the macOS update until it's been out for three months or more.

Did you try to open and close the clamshell multiple times? Once you close the clamshell you really need to press on an application or on the task bar before you open the clamshell again. This is when the screen gets frozen

well....that was actually the very first time I ever closed the laptop while everything was connected
the only thing that went weird was the fact that all the external displays suddenly switched to "mirroring"
other than that, it behaved normally when I opened it again....kinda ****** that all my windows are in a pile now

unfortunately 10.13.1 is just like expected. does not differ any way. Still the same core issues. WindowServer still leaks memory and freezes.

But to be honest I did not even expect it to fix anything since nothing was done to fix this in the 10.13.1 beta 5

And AFAIK the issue has been reported to apple even before high sierra release. It's very clear to me now that Apple Focus has been on iPhone for many years now and the last proper macOS release was Snow Leopard (10.6) many years ago. I'm now seriously considering dumping macs after almost 20 years of relationship with them

Same issues. Late 2013 15” MBP full spec with NVIDIA graphics.

I run external monitors at two office locations and have had no issues hardware/software wise since new.

Install HS and start experiencing graphic artitfacts/glitches and crashes at least once a day (mouse keeps working). Also doesn’t wake from sleep properly if unplugged when in clamshell mode

Did a clean HS install and it made no difference. Still the same issues.

Installed 10.13.1 and still no change. Crashy, glitchy etc.

10.13.1 is almost stable for me. It just freeze in ONE way: when I disconnect the external monitor.

A few minutes after I disconnect the external monitor, WindowServer goes crazy and I need force a shutdown or restart.

If I don't disconnect the external monitor, it runs fine for days.

BUT, if I keep the external monitor plugged for 3 or 4 days in a row, the screen becomes unstable, blinks and I need to unplug, restart and plug again.
