Slow finder previews

Since the update from El Capitan to High Sierra FINDER previews of images or PDF are very slow.

On a 2015 MacBook Air with back then best available configuration....

Any suggestions beside going back to Capitan which I'd love to do but XCode forces me to use High Sierra or Sierra (which I skipped due to the frustrating problems and low performance of each new OSX version...).

Hi, Chris!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I see that you are having trouble getting Finder to load previews of images and PDFs. It seems to do so very slowly. I'd be happy to help!

Based on what you've described, I would recommend the following steps. Try them in order, testing after each:

  1. Relaunch Finder by selecting the Apple  menu > Force Quit (or pressing Command-Option-Esc). Then click Finder > Relaunch. More information here: How to force an app to quit - Apple Support
  2. Restart your computer by selecting the Apple  menu > Restart....
  3. Test in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
  4. Test in a new user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Have a great day!
