Apple TV 4k WakeUp Issues

I've got the new AppleTV 4k and am experience wake-up issues. When I click the remote, the AppleTV light comes on and the TV automatically switches inputs over to HDMI-2 where the AppleTV is plugged in. The problem is, that then no picture comes through despite the AppleTV being on.

Oddly enough, when I look at the TV source selector, it shows previews of each input and I can see a preview of the AppleTV screen showing that there is, indeed, a picture... but when I switch to the input, nothing comes through.

I switched back to the AppleTV 3 with tvOS11 and it works fine. But AppleTV 4k seems to have severe wake-up issues with being able to reconnect the image to the TV.

Currently the only solution I have is to unplug the power from the AppleTV, then plug it back in (while leaving the HDMI cord alone). If I do a reboot, then the picture comes up fine...

Any tips? Faulty unit? Thanks!

I have an Apple TV 4K (2 actually). One is connected to my 55" Samsung 4k tv and the other to my 40" Samsung 4k tv. I had this problem also and calling Apple got me nowhere. Exasperated after a month of trying to figure it out, I remembered that I changed a setting in my 'Video and Audio" settings. There is a setting called 'Chroma' which is set to 4:2:0. I changed this to 4:4:4 because the description said that the 4:4:4 setting "improves clarity, but requires high-speed cables." I had high-speed cables and who doesn't want a better picture? When set to 4:4:4, the signal sent to my Samsung is enough to wake the Samsung, but with no picture. I've tried different cables to no avail. My Apple TV only behaves as expected when Chroma is set to 4:2:0. I know this because I clicked on 'Reset Video Settings' and the ATV reverted back to 4:2:0 and everything works again. I can wake it from sleep even when I'm already watching my Cable box and it comes on immediately. I can even restart it with the remote again.

Same issue happened on mine tonight. I would push buttons on the remote and the light would flash on the Apple TV, but no picture on the TV even after switching inputs. I unplugged the Apple TV and now it’s working again. Brand new Sony 4K 900 series TV. Apple quality control has certainly dropped.

Sorry, but an update... This morning I turned on the Apple TV 4K and no signal to the LG 65" OLED TV. Had to pull power from the Apple TV 4K and then plug it back in to get the signal. So for me buying all new cables, doing a Reset of the Apple TV 4K

I guess what actually is occurring is that this fault occurs intermittently only if the Apple TV 4K has had a chance to sleep for a time.....

Yes, that‘s it - and as it doesn‘t fall to sleep automatically, you must let him fall to sleep manually each time you used Apple TV, as I described! Does nobody from Apple read this???

Same issue here. the latest update 11.1 dosnt seem to make any difference.
thinking of go to the apple store and talk to them, but its a long drive.

An Apple update should fix the problem i guess. Cant se that its hardware related.
And why can't you contact Apple support through email?

I have been having the same issues as all the above. I have changed the HDMI cable, restarted the device,I even have a brand new LG OLED TV, never had such an issue with another Apple TV 4. Even the control disconnect and I have to restart the unit for it to reconnect but it only last 4 to 5 minutes before it disconnect again.

Apple rly s*cks at making GPU drivers or something. My last gen Apple TV will make static artifacts after coming out of sleep. My new 4k Apple TV's GPU doesn't come out of sleep. My old 2010 Mac mini (Nvidia gtx 320) used to have the same issue when it first came out (static artifacts [took Apple a year or more before they fixed it]).

I have a 4k HDR LG tv from 2016. My Apple TV is connected directly the the tv... w.t.f Apple? Stop reinventing the wheel on all your sub systems and APIs... you're using BSD for crying out loud. Just go back to OpenGL and Vulkan if that has any root to your GPU issues... its pathetic at this point and its going to cost you money (it sure is from me any how).

I was going to rent a movie but nope my Apple tv wouldn't turn on... so 'F' it I used my Amazon fire tv instead. Next night I was going to rent a movie after power resetting the Apple TV... nope Apple wants me to enter my long iTunes password after only two days? Used my FireTV again... (I would return this crap if I didn't use it for development).

Same Problem with my Samsung Flat SUHD TVKS8090. It won‘t wake up. I have to pull the plug.

No problem with my old Apple TV 4!

Hope that Apple will soon solve this issue.

Same issue with a 2016 Samsung 4K (KU6290 - 6 series). Keep having to power cycle.

ok. r u connected directly to TV ? or how ? which HDMI port ? its very frustrating. I have 4 fourth generations and three do this and one does not ( coincidentally connected directly to the TV )

Update: I spoke with customer care last week and since all the devices are still in the 30day window, I just returned mine. No applecare, no warranty, just did a simple product return and replacement for the one ATV4k that wasnt working. New one arrives today, fingers crossed!

I don't think cables is the answer. I spoke with an Apple tech who was quite polite and professional. He suggested buying the Belkin cable on Apple's site, so I did. Didn't work. Bought another 'high speed' cable. Didn't fix it. Now I have to figure out a time to get this thing returned.

I think it’s s software issue but who knows. If I go into the settings and do a cable test it kills the WiFi too. I can connect but I only get 1-2mbps and like a 40 ping time. After I restart the Apple TV it goes back to 60mbps+. Nice work Apple!

WiseJD, thank you so much for your post. I am having the exact same issue. My TV is an LG OLED 65 C7P, and my Apple TV 4K is still within the return period too. After reading your post, I will be returning mine and exchanging it. Any time I tried to wake my Apple TV 4K, I would either have no picture or I would have a blurry picture. I, too, always had to unplug the unit to get back to normal. I have a feeling Apple can fix this with a software update, but I don't want to wait.

Thanks so much for posting your outcome. Other than this issue, it's a great device.

Haven't had any problems yet.. Apple tv starts now without any problem 🙂
