Photos High Sierra Edit Menu

When you right-click on a photo in Photos High Sierra it presents a drop down menu containing the "Edit With" command. When you select "Edit With" it slides out a menu of Apps on your Mac to use for editing photos. Many of my photo editing Apps are not on this list. Is there a way to remove and/or add photo editing Apps to this "Edit With" menu? How does it chose which Apps to put on there? Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about:

I know of no way to change that list and Apple has not published how they determine what is there - what Photo editor do you have that is not in the list?

And several people have noted difficulty with using the Edit with capability - for now it probably is worthwhile investing $0.99 in the External Editor for Photos Extension for Photos which works very well and have been in use for over a year and seems trouble free

My PS C3 app is in a subfolder in the Applications folder and it is shown. However, my PSE app is not, regardless of where it is located in the Applications folder.

You might do as Larry suggested and get the the 99¢ External Editors For Photos from the App Store. This user tip shows how to use it: External Editors in Photos Are Here

In Photos 3 it's access in the Edit mode here:

Thank Old Toad. I already have External Editors and it does work fine. What I'm talking about is in Photos 3 (High Sierra) you can simply right click on a photo, and in the drop down you can choose "edit with", and go to an editor directly.

This is a really cool feature of Photos 3. It has some built in protection for a photo that was edited with an external editor. The fact that Photoshop is not on the list is a minor annoyance. I will use this instead of External Editors. External Editors was a life saver for the last couple of years until Apple came out with this new feature.

I assume that is using the $0.99 External Editors for Photos extension from the App store and not using the edit with feature - Is that correct?

No, I need External Editors mostly for DxO Perspective and Color Strokes or Inpaint.

Some applications have an editing extension, that will call the complete application. I am using Affinity Photos this way and Luminar 2018 and GraphicConverter 10. Picktorial can also be called this way, but I rarely use it.

Luminar, Affinity Photos, Graphic Converter need to be called using their extension. When I try to use them with "Image > Edit With", I will have the problem with saving back to Photos.

, but I never see anything but Preview, Color Sync and Grab.

Check, if there are upgrades available for your photo editing applications. Only applications fully compatible with High Sierra will show in that menu.

I'm seeing a few more applications in this menu.

It is weird, that even applications not meant for picture processing will show there, like TeXShop.

Affinity Photos cannot yet open photos in HEIF/HEIC format. Your wife's iPhone may be set to use the new, space saving HEIF format. Not all external editors support it yet. When I select a JPEG, Affinity Photos will appear in the "Select other" section and can be launched on the photo.

See this support document, on how to set the iPhone/iPad to use the more compatible image formats, if it is currently set to save all new photos as HEIF/HEIC:

Old Toad - Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 is in my applications folder, but it is not showing up in the the "edit with" drop down. I have to select the app by choosing "other..." and browsing for it.

I noticed that the applications that are on the list are either in the /applications/ folder or in the /applications/utilities/ folder. the Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 app is in /applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2017/ folder. I wonder if the app needs to be located up one level in the /applications/ folder? Not sure if I can simply move the app up a level or if that goofs something up in my CC instalation.

BTW, Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 edits the new HEIC with no problem.

That makes sense. I did edit a photo with photoshop, and I saved, and it seemed to save the image correctly in Photos. But if I press the normal Edit button on the edited photo, it says that the photo is still being edited by another editor. It will be nice when Photoshop becomes compatible with the "Edit With" protocol.

Yes it is strange. Snagit, for example, doesn't care about being compatible with Apple Photos 3, yet is shows up on the list. All I can think is that some simple editors are designed to be called from within other programs, like a shell program, where others, like PS are designed to be totally standalone? Maybe that is because of Adobe's elaborate licensing systems.

I did have success with PS. It just didn't send the signal to the call program (Edit With) that it was done and the file was closed. So the warning comes up and asks if you saved the file.
