High GPU diode temp and high fan RPM

Ever since updating to high sierra recently (I know, slow adopter), I noticed increased high fan usage and high gpu diode temperatures when browsing some web pages. io9 pages can push the gpu diode to 95c with associated high fan rpms (2500 rpm). When I check the activity monitor, there's no CPU load over 5 to 10%.

Specifically I'm running:

OS 10.12.6

iMac retina 27" (late 2014)

4Ghz intel core i7

16GB memory

AMD radeon R9 M295X with 4GB

I've reset the pram and SMC (multiple times in a session to make sure it took)

One thing I know for sure, it wasn't operating like this under sierra.

Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated

Oct 5, 2017 1:44 PM in response to David Sirola

David,

Your system does have some problems I will list them for you.

First, I want to point out that Mac OS was designed from it's very beginnings to be EXTREMELY secure. I suspect you may have come from a MS Windows machine where using Antivirus software is the norm. With a Mac they are 100% unnecessary and most cases they tend to create more problems than they solve. You have one of the worst offenders (Symantec) installed. I recommend locating the uninstall procedures from the developers and uninstall your Symantec AV immediately. Never install any AV, cleaning, or any other third party maintenance apps on a Mac. At best they are unnecessary and at worst they can damage Mac OS.

Next, over the years you have installed a number of Internet Plugins, I suspect many are not necessary and should be uninstalled. Please look over your report for what you have installed and decide what can go. Instructions for removing them are in Safari 8 (Yosemite): If you need to remove a plug-in

You also have an orphan file, please review your report and click the link to remove it.

Once you have done all of the above restart the computer in Safe Mode to clear the caches. Then reset the SMC and PRAM while ALL peripherals (EHDs, scanners, printers, etc..) are disconnected. This only applies to USB, Firewire and other cable connected devices. After the resets have been done you can re-connect each.

Then check to see how your computer is now operating.

Just off the phone with apple, and they had me re-install sierra with no effect. While they want me to bring in the machine, I'm unconvinced it's hardware and not software. I can run the GPU diode up to near 100º C under safari by going to and running content from 1 or both pages (iheart radio and go90 video - not isolated to these sites and each pushes GPU to over 97º). But under chrome, while running both pages simultaneously, the GPU never goes above 70º and CPU use is below 15% for all associated processes.

I think the short term answer is chrome. I'd rather be running safari, but I can't imagine 100º C temps are good for the long term health of what was a very expensive machine. Thanks for the help.

Oct 6, 2017 9:47 AM in response to rkaufmann87

Again, many thanks for taking a look at this for me. I assume you don't think the high gpu diode temp is normal either.

While some issues have lessened, the problem with high GPU diode temps and safari has not been eliminated.

Safari GPU diode temps

76º browsing facebook

82º browsing NY Times

90º iheart.com (radio)

98º go90.com watching video / 40% of 5K screen width

Chrome

82º go90.com video

Firefox

88º go90 video

76º iheart.com radio

Something is going on with safari. While the easy answer is to switch to chrome, I like safari as my everyday browser and use chrome for secure payments and such. Entre-check follows

Thanks

Hi

No luck. followed directions as suggested, removed symantec stuff via their removal tool, SMC/PRAM, etc and situation remains the same? Embedded web page video, about 1/3 overall screen width, GPU diode runs to 97, fans at 2550rpm, cpu usage for the page 6.9% I do not see gpu heating with youtube video.

Do you know if apple' s use of METAL changed between El Capitain and Sierra pushing more load onto the GPU?

I've seen others on the web mentioning high GPU diode temps, but unable to determine if this is normal for my iMac.

Thanks.
