Jabber in Messages - High Sierra

Hi,

Judging by my own experience and I have been using iChat and Messages since iChat 2 I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

I have a GoogleTalk Buddy List that shows but the Account doe not show in Messages or System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

AOL have just announced the end of AIM.

They had already said they would not let client apps connect. (Messages, iChat, ProteusX and many others.)

Bonjour has also gone from Messages in High Sierra.

It does not surprise me that the Jabber part does not work that well even if you get to work some of the time.

Hi,

It's been a while since I checked.

Yahoo stopped their service and changed the app so much it was not compatible with the old service.

This was probably something to do with the 2013 data breach.

As Apple had added Yahoo at iChat 6 they stopped developing Yahoo for Mac.

MSN has virtually died as Microsoft have bought out several other apps including Skype.

AOL have just announced the end of AIM.

During Messages 7 they changed the login process meaning Apple IDs used as AIM Screen Names only worked in iChat 6.01 and higher. During Sierra they announced they would not be taking input from AIM Clients which included iChat and Messages.

Psi will handle Jabber which includes, at least for the moment , Google Talk.

However it been a while but Google announced some time ago that Google talk was being replaced.

Having said that Hangouts has not taken over.

AdiumX has always seemed to be the most Apple like in it's interface and the way it works.

I have not tried out the latest version.

It handles, or did, more options than other apps.

Trillian did a could PC app that crossed over to Macs

Uses a Trillian ID at the base level but you can then access many other services.

The PC version at one time had a Pro add-on that you paid for that could do Video and Audio Chats.

I never like Skype after testing it.

There is no central server and the app uses part of your connection to the internet to support other connections.

Of course it has now been bought out by Microsoft.

There are apps that can join Facebook's messenger and it can also be done from a Browser but of course it does require that everyone you know is on Facebook and we know the issue that they have had with changing Privacy settings ...

Hi,

I have not.

AS mentioned in this and other threads I added it from the Messages Menu > Jabber item and used my Google ID.

The Account creates a Buddy List but does not actually show in Accounts (Messages > Preferences > Accounts) and also not in Internet Accounts.

I did it this way as the server is different from the Mail one and adding it "First" to Messages and then activating Mail in Internet account meant you could do both in Sierra.

I then tried adding and account just for Messages for the Google Talk account.

This does give you more access to Server settings but still make no difference. the Buddy List still shows but the account does not in Messages

NOR can you actually chat.

I have also tried deleting the com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist in High Sierra but it makes no difference as the Buddy List is still showing without an account.

This .plist is recreated.

In fact on checking it today after I switched on the MacBook Pro running High Sierra it shows as Updating today without Messages being launched.

(So does the AIM one that has no active account whatsoever !!!)

As I have no "Account" showing I do not have the lower half (compared to Sierra) of the Preferences > General pane.

This means I cannot access the "When I Quit, set my Status to Off Line" item that is probably the issue here.

on Launching the High Sierra version I do find that I seem to have removed the account some how but I cannot say which action actually did this.

I tried some quite extreme combos of things last time I tried some way out in the left field that did not seem to work when I checked before giving up for a night or two.

Hi,

I did seem to be in this same state as I detailed in my last reply - where I also found out I have removed the account.

I have now added it in Internet Accounts ( + icon) >Other > Messages Account > Jabber choice in Drop down. Automatic for Server and Port and SSL On.

This added the account to Messages, shows me the rest of the General Pane and a Buddy List.

The Server Settings tab in Messages confirms it is using the gmail.com server and the port 5223 and SSL.

What I don't have is a visible Buddy List or an option in the Window Menu of the app to select Buddies or the name of the account.

Ergo I can't tell if I am really logged in.

EDIT !!

Use the Status item in the Messages menu and set to Available and the Buddy List will appear (That will teach me to close the window before hand).

Now in Window Menu as well.

More info.

The Preferences > Accounts list it's title as Gmail.

This does not show in the Window Menu, which stays as "Buddies".

The Buddy List Window does not have a title (Might be due to only one Buddy List account).

However all the iChat icons for Text, Video, Audio and Screen Sharing still show across the bottom even though the app has not been able to do that for a long time in AIM and Jabber accounts (AS per iChat and early version of Messages).

Further tests.

Untick the "Show all accounts (It means except iMessages) into one (Buddy) List"

This titles the Buddy List in the Window Menu and on the Buddy List window itself.

Ralph, long time follower & 5th note to you (from what I can remember) -

Have you figured out how to "remove" Jabber from Messages? I had an old gChat list that's managed to survive upgrading to High Sierra (and Google phasing out gChat for Hangouts), or maybe they are Hangout handles that still exist? At any rate, I've disconnected ALL accounts from Internet Accounts and inside Messages preferences.

I'll let you know if I manage to succeed, but if you have any insight, would love to know.

Turns out, even with an Internet Account turned off, Messages still detects any Jabber connections (which is a nice way of letting the user know they have a tied chat account they can still activate).

Hopefully this helps anyone else with a similar conundrum.

I too was running into a similar situation with a Google Hangouts account. Most of the companies I work with use gmail as their corporate email. I prefer to be a little more "old school" and I continue to use Mail.app and Messages.app. While I was able to set up gmail with no issues, setting up as an Internet Account, I did notice there is no "chat" feature in the account. As you mentioned, I can use a un/pw to log into a Jabber account within Preferences inside Messages. However, as you detailed, there's no way for me to see any of my Google contacts who exist in my Internet Account.

Fortunately most of my industry exists wholly inside an Apple community therefore we all have iPhones and/or .Mac/MobileMe/iCloud accounts and can use Messages across devices, which is very fortunate. The loss of AIM is unfortunate for all Mac users.
