Can you not change folder icons in Mac OS High Sierra any more?

I tried using copy and paste to change desktop icon on High Sierra 10.13.4 it does not work, but i tried drag droping the .icns file directly to he folder icon on "get info" and it works fine

Possibly. I can still change the icons. As has already been mentioned here several times, you must paste a copy of an image into the icon well, not drop an icon file onto it. It has been this way for at least the last three OS versions.

If you drop a file onto the icon well, I think it will use the icon of the file you dropped, not the set of icons in the file. that icon will most likely be a generic icon as the Finder doesn't have the matching icon in its set of icons. It just doesn't work that way anymore.

It works!

GET INFO from file or folder icon WHICH you want to replace. Next to it open also icon file WITH which you want to replace. Click and drag new icon over the old one and release.

MacOS High Sierra 10.13.2 works like a charm. Using .icns 1024x1024 icon files.

I'm on a Mac Mini mid 2011 with OSX 10.13.3 and this works like a charm. I too was attempting to simply paste without 'selecting all' in preview as you advise.

Ashleys answer is wrong, you can change the blue folder icons and other icons as has been described here and on other threads many times. DianeRedHorse explains it perfectly.

I have also set my mac up to not use the generic blue folder icons but use a custom folder colour as the generic folder icon, so when I ask for a new folder I get the colour folder I want.

You can use an app like Liteicon, or get crafty and hack the System Folder.

This does not work for SYSTEM folders. Having tried just today to see if things changed it has not. As an example, please try to put an icon on your SYSTEM Library folder. I selected an icon of a set of books. The system prompted me for admin password but then did NOT change the default pillar facade that is the standard Apple LIbrary folder icon. Try for yourself. You can change most folders just not SYSTEM folders...the one, in particular I wanted to change was the Applications System Folder. I found a workaround which is described above. Changing any other folder and user folders is easy peasy. Just drag the icn or image to the Get Information top left image of any folder.

I didn't know the drag'n drop method didn't work anymore. BUT, the copy and paste method doesn't either for me. Ive tried both ways. I even resorted to trying to see if my old copy of Candybar could do anything -- nada.

this works fine on the original folder but does not transfer to alias folders. if you do the get info on the alias folder it does show the custom icon in the preview section but not on the desktop where the alias folder is located. please advise. thanks!

I have this problem with alias folders. I have found that I can change the original folder image, then create an alias. Once the alias has been created, you could attempt to change the original icon back to default. It seems changing the icon for the original doesn't automatically change the alias folder icon.

This does not work for SYSTEM folders, however. I was hopeful. To see what I am referring to. Go to your main Apple Hard Drive. You should see these four folders: Applications, Library, System and Users. Each of these four blue folders has an "imprinted" icon from Apple. Try to change the given icon on any of these four folders using any of these methods above and you will see...no icon change.

I am able to change folder and file icons in High Sierra version 10.13.5 as well as Mojave Beta 2 & 3. It was confusing at first because I had been able to change icons in Sierra version 10.12.6 and then I couldn't. In addition, I couldn't change icons in High Sierra or Mojave. I am not sure if there is some kind of caching problem or not but I found that right after I restarted the computer I could change icons in any OS. I can use any of the standard methods to change icons as discussed above.

You should be able to. I can change mine.

I can change the system folders (except System), too, just need to authenticate.

I tried changing the icon to an external hard drive but when I try to use any image - png, jpg, icns, ico - the icon will display as the default/generic version of the file type. The rest of my drives still display the custom images from before the update. I deleted the generic change to the system default yellow drive icon. I can't find a fix anywhere either...
