I'm using iOS 11.
I turn sound down to zero using the external buttons, but I still get sound from alerts and text messages.
Is there an easy way to mute all sound like an iPhone and previous iPads?

Go to
Settings
Sounds
and at the top is a slider for ringers and alerts. Turn that down and it should turn the sound down for you
Have you swiped up from just above the Home button to bring up Control Center? If I'm not mistaken, there should be a mute/unmute setting there (looks like a bell).
You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the control center (sipe up twice if running iOs 11), and then tap on the Bell icon to mute all sounds.
Alternatively holding down the Volume down button on the side if the iPad for a couple seconds will also mute the iPad.
So I would need to do that every time?
I was looking for an easy way to turn the sound on and off like all my other Apple devices.
Is not possible on the new iPad?

You don’t have to do it every time. It’s a master volume control that sets a ‘permanent’ level until you decide to change it
