iBooks cannot open any book with High Sierra

Since upgrade to High Sierra, iBooks cannot open any book ("This book can’t be opened. / There is a problem with iTunes (--42408). Reinstall iTunes, then try again.")

Before the upgrade I could open and read all my books. The same library can be read on my iOS devices. But now on my MacBook Pro it does not work. The app (iBooks) does open, and it does list my books. When I try to open any book I get the message:

This book can’t be opened.

There is a problem with iTunes (--42408). Reinstall iTunes, then try again.

I cannot believe that it really needs itunes to be reinstalled.

I had the same problem "(--42408). Reinstall iTunes, then try again." Downloading the new iTunes didn't help. Here's what worked for me:

  1. Delete the book you're trying to open
  2. Close iBooks
  3. Re-open iBooks
  4. The book you deleted should now have a "cloud" icon in the upper right of the book's cover. Double click the book to re-download.

You don't have to do this for every book. Doing this for 1 book should fix the rest of your library.

I believe I may have the solution. After having this issue for a couple of weeks, I upgraded my iPhone and backed it up. This was the first time I had synced my iPhone on my Mac/with iTunes in many months. After the sync with my iPhone I was able to view purchased books in iBooks again.

I am uncertain if this is definitively the case as I am unable to reproduce the original error.
