Can iMovie create and export a movie in 9:16 (portrait) orientation?

I have a video that was shot in portrait orientation on the iPhone, 9:16 aspect ratio. I would like to edit it and export it in that aspect ratio. iMovie wants to pillar box it (I think that's the right term) into a 16:9 aspect movie.

Does iMovie support 9:16 movies, or do I have to use a different video editor?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Andrew,

Current iMovie 10.1.7 only exports in widescreen 16:9. If you export a 9:16 clip you will get black pillar bars to make it fit the 16:9 aspect ratio of iMovie. However, in timeline view you can select Crop/Fit and rotate your 9:16 clip sideways so that it fits the iMovie screen. Then share it to your desktop, open it in Quicktime Player, and Edit/Rotate it vertically again.
