Why is my AppleTV no longer sending an audio signal to my sound bar via the optical connection on the Sharp TV.

Until two weeks ago my AppleTV 4th Gen worked perfectly with my Sharp TV and my Vizio sound bar. Now I do not get any audio, except that built into the tv itself. What could have caused this?

The atv has no idea you have a sound bar it see you connect a hdmi device which support hdcp and that make it send audio and visuals to the thing connected to it in your case your tv what happens from there is not known or controlled by the appletv, but if people have set surround as audio in the settings of their appletv and dont connect surround speakers to their setup then when the applets play surround material audio may be playing out of speakers which don’t exist

Since the ATV 4K is a new device you may need to go into your Settings menu in your Sharp TV and program it to out put via Optical when playing from whatever input you use to switch to ATV. TV's are not very smart in this regard and need some "direction, typically achieved via Settings menu. With receivers and pre-processors a one time setup is always requires. One must program the pathway for both video and audio for each respective component source, i.e. CD Player, Blu-Ray, ATV, etc.

Good luck,
