Music copywriting

If I put a song from my iTunes on my iMovie I am not allowed to post the movie to Facebook or Instagram because it says it’s copywriting music. But yet iMovie lets me put iTunes music on it. For example I put John Mayer’s song daughters as the background of the movie and I wanted to post it but Instagram wouldn’t let me because it says it’s copywriting. So why would iMovie allow for me to even put it on my iMovie if it’s copywriting?

Hello Blam3Short,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are unable to add music from iTunes to an iMovie project and you are getting a message that it is copyrighted music. This would be because the music is DRM protected and cannot be copied. See the following:

If a song on your device still appears unavailable, it may be of a type that can’t be used in iMovie. For example, songs protected by digital rights management can’t be used in iMovie.

From this support article:

iMovie for iOS (iPhone, iPod touch): Add audio

While this article is for iMovie for iOS, the information about DRM material is also applicable to iMovie for Mac.

Best regards.
