iMac (EMC: 2124) Intel core 2 duo 1.83ghz OS X 10.5.8

I have recently bought an old 2006 iMac 1.83ghz core 2 duo desktop computer which is on OS X 10.5.8. (EMC: 2124)

I intended to use it as a media station using Logic Pro and similar audio editing tools in my home studio along side using office for mac to do my college work etc.

Unfortunately, I cannot update any of the programs such any safari or Firefox and therefore unable to download programs which are compatible with the OS. What shall or can I do to change this so that my computer is usable in the modern technological age?

Please feel free to email me direct or reply here. I will be keeping an eye on the post. (*********)

I have also purchased a 2007 mac mini with 10.6.8 snow leopard freshly installed from eBay to use as a backup media center/server. Although this was intended to be used at a different office away from home which is inconvenient. But I am skeptical as to whether that will have the same problems. (Although I am going to fit a new t7600 cpu and 3gb of ddr2 ram to the mac mini along with a ssd drive)

Thank you in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon.

One love

If this is your model:

Then you would need to 1. buy a Snow leopard (10.6) retail disk for $20 from the Apple store and then 2. buy a Lion (10.7) install media, also about $20. However, even if you go to the max. 2 GB of RAM, you will certainly not be happy with its performance while running Lion (4 GB RAM is considered a minimum). Add to that the fact that you'd need to check how much RAM is considered a minimum for Logic Pro - it may not run well.

And, even if you do all of that, Lion has not been supported for quite a number of years, so you would not be able to get current browser or other app versions.

In other words, an 11 year old outdated, minimal RAM and very slow, outdated processor fitted Mac is not too well suited for your purpose.

My comments would also relate to the Mini - 3 GB of RAM are minimal, so I'd seriously consider it NOT worth the upgrades/purchases you are wanting to do.

And, FYI, please do not publish any private information in a public online forum - it is not considered safe.

Thank you for the speedy reply. Although I beg to differ on some of your views.

Logic pro 8 only requires 1gb (2gb recommended) ram and a core 2 duo processor and applications such as word require even less. And that is literally all I need with the help of a Internet search engine.

Most of the work I'll be doing is very light.

(Yes I still use old programmes/software and hardware, mainly for nostalgic purposes)

Bassically, if I can record 2/3 tracks simultaneously via my 16ch audio interface and write a report, I'll be happy

Your Mac will run happily with 2 GB of RAM with Snow Leopard installed. Any later OS (which would be Lion as that is how far this model can go) requires more than that. Using it with 2 GB of RAM running Lion and Logic Pro and/or recording will result in very slow performance (lots of beachball spinning), hangups, etc. But, of course, it is yours and you can try it to see if it will work - you asked for opinions.

And, FWIW, I do not know if you can get a reasonably secure browser version that will work with an outdated OS such as Lion.

Good luck!
