iOS 11: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU UPGRADE!!!

Before you upgrade to iOS 11.

Backup your iDevice to either (or both) iCloud or the latest iTunes on a computer.

iOS 11 is an all 64-bit OS.

That means any apps on your iPad that are still 32-bit apps that haven't been updated to the new 64-bit code will no longer work after you have upgraded to iOS 11.

You can find out which apps on your iPad are still 32-bit ones by going into

Settings, About, Applications and tap on the disclosure arrow after where is states how many applications are installed on your iDevice

The application list that follows will be a list that shows all of the remaining apps on your iPad that are still 32-bit apps and have not had any recent updates.

So, if there are any apps in that list that you use a lot and that have data stored to them that is important to you, you need to find a way to copy that data to either a computer or use an offsite, cloud data storage service, like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. OR email this data to yourself, if need be, to save this info as there will be no way to retrieve it later if no new 64 bit coded update ever surfaces from the app developers.

So, this is, NOW, the time to seek out alternative apps, in the iOS App Store, to replace those older and incompatible 32-bit applications that have NOT been updated in quite sometime.

Then, you can make the decision to upgrade to iOS 11 OR wait a while longer to upgrade and stay with iOS 10.3.3 for the time being.

Once the decision is made to upgrade to iOS 11.

Then, the BEST, SAFEST and RELIABLE way to upgrade/update an iDevice is to do the upgrade with your iPad connected to a computer running the latest iTunes version.

Either iTunes version 12.6.3 found here.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208079

OR

if still available, iTunes 12.7.

Good Luck to ALL!

You’re better off purchasing a new up to date spec’d 2017, iPad 5.

https://www.apple.com/ipad-9.7/

Get the largest storage capacity you can afford.

Forget the iPad Air 1. It’s nearly 5 years old, now, and doesn’t supoort all of the current features of either iOS 10 or 11, like Split View multitasking and only has 1 GB of RAM.

If you decide to go with a iPad Air 2 (nearly 4 years old, now) go with the largest storage capacity you can afford and is available. Go for a 64 or 128 GBs storage model.

I would stay away from purchasing one of these used, in case you get stuck with one that has Activation Lock with no means or way of deactivating the Lock.

It's a security software feature that cannot be circumvented, even by Apple, if you get a pre-owned iPad where the original owner’s info has locked the device with no way to get in touch with that owner.

Apple has refurbished iPad models at a discount that are completely treated like new devices and carry all of Apple’s full warranties.

https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

If you purchase a new or Apple Certified Refurbished iPad, make sure to budget and purchase for extended, two year AppleCare+ Warranty.

You can purchase AppleCare+ at purchase or you have ONLY 60 days AFTER purchase to purchase extended AppleCare+ warranty.

Two year AppleCare+ covers two incidents (one per year) accidental damage with a small nominal fee to receive a replacement iPad, in case of complete iPad failure, accidental screen damage, free battery replacement, free iPad power block replacement and iPad cable replacement.

All of this warranty coverage for two years.

Good Luck to You!

Problem with making this a user tip is no one will see it BEFORE they decide to upgrade to iOS 11.

I am trying to get users to see and read this post, on the first page of the iPad using communities, to make an informed decision before a user upgrades their iDevice/s to iOS 11.

No one sees a user tip unless a link is posted for the tip in a reply post.

In addition the post has to be something pertaining to upgrading/installing iOS 11 on their iDevice/s.

No one will ever see this posting if a user never asks the question.

And this post/user tip would be too late for ANY user who decided to just blindly upgrade their iDevice to iOS 11 and didn't know the consequences.

So, hence, the way I am trying to do this seems to be the ONLY way to keep this post visible on the 1st page of these iPad forums,

I was going to do this with the iPod and iPhone forums, but I think this would be too much work keeping this post active on all the page 1's in each community.

So, I have limited this post to the iPad using community only.

Also worth doing is finding out whether your app's upgrade to iOS 11 for FREE or if it requires payment.

One app in particular I have that I rely on a lot is now available for iOS 11 but it requires me to pay again, not only for the app itself ($24) but also for all of its plug-ins (three of them at $79 each!). Admittedly this is a specialised film-industry app but it may not be the only app that requires you to PAY for your upgrade. Moving to iOS 11 could be costly, so you need to be prepared for that.

Yeah,

There are some developers trying to re-monetise their apps by charging again for their 64-bit versions.

With some types of 64 bit only apps, now, the developers have to spend a lot of time both re-coding AND doing major upgrades/updates to their apps.

So, these developers really want/need to recoup their efforts, monetarily, to brings their apps up to date and to include new features that take advantage of this rather new and extensively changed iOS 11.

I listed the most commonly known issues, like older apps NOT working, at all, and with NO WAY to retrieve the data from these apps, once a user upgrades their iDevices to iOS 11.

So MichelPM I have read everything from this post. Would that also include Apple Apps like FaceTime and Messages? I recently downloaded the 11.1.1 Software update. Everything performed fine, then when I went to use both FT and Messages it asked for the sign in password and it will not go any farther with a reply stating that there is an activation error. I tried all the simple fixes like restarting the apps, restarting iPad, but to no avail. Is it something I'll have to wait for to be fixed on the next update?

I just tried that, and it still will not go no further. Its weird because, I try my password, and it has a signing in spinning emblem but goes to "there has been an error with activation". I then tried resetting a new password and it still is giving me this error message. Now its starting to effect my MacBook Pro, and I have not changed or updated anything on it lately. Very weird situation, and I can't find too many other people with the same issue.

Sounds like other issues with FaceTime and iMessage going on that may not be, necessarily, related to iOS 11.

I have no solutions for you.

Post a seperate post about this to see if others can help you with this.

This is supposed to be a single posting to help users who know nothing about iOS 11 learn more about it before they decide to make the decision to upgrade their iPads.

I don’t want to open this post up to other questions, issues or solutions.

If I could lock this posting down, I would have.

Good Luck to You!

Thank you. I am also inquiring about the ipad air and air 2-how long will they be able to upgrade?

My husband was considering getting himself a regular ipad air-at least a 32GB model.

But we are concerned on how long the regular ipad air would last for updates- and is the 32GB model a good one to get?

Thank you,

Carol
