How can I get my iOS 11.0.3 iPhone to play Netflix on my tv through the lightening to hdmi adapter

Since I updated to iOS 11, Netflix videos will not play on my tv through the lightening to hdmi at cord. When you press play on a title, the loading screen pops up but the title actually starts to play, the loading screen on the tv freezes and the title plays on the phone screen

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.0.3

Hi,

For me iT is not working if the movie is downloaded. When I delete the offline content it works again. So:

iPhone -> hdmi -> tv - downloaded content -> nok

iPhone -> hdmi -> tv - streaming content -> ok

This is really annoying. WiFi is bad in hotel in my room so I want to download it where is fast internet and then stream it.

Netflix this is a big fail.

I’m having a problem with Netflix over lightning to hdmi on both my iphone and iPad. It mirrors both devices fine and once I hit play on Netflix I get black screen with audio playing fine.

I’d love a work around if anyone has found one?I’m away in Thailand and some nights just want to stay cool and chill out in the hotel room.

Thanks,

Valerie

Yes I’m in the same boat. So annoying. Movies I’ve download into my iPad play fine but I wanted to save those for flights and long journeys.

A friend suggested it’s a hdcp issue, high definition copyright protection. It’s activated from the tv over the cable. I know from soem recent experience with visuals that the hdcp would need to be disabled to allow content to project out from macs laptops etc. Maybe this is the problem?

It is not an hdcp issue. I encountered the issue only after updating to iOS 11. As I have two iPads and one is still on iOS10, I just checked with that one and it still plays Netflix movies on external display. So the issue is caused by the Netflix app in combination with iOS11, as some of you already suggested. I hope Netflix and/or Apple will fix this asap. In the meantime, I am happy I did not update both of my iPads yet.

Just adding my name to those upset with this problem. Countless hours on phone calls with both companies. Rebooting, reloading, plugging and unplugging. There seems to be no way to watch Netflix on my TV with my friends. We have to huddle around one iPad.

***- I’m cancelling Netflix until They get this fixed. Everything on Amazon and iTunes works great!

Thanks for the aggro Netflix!!!

I have commented on this discussion topic back on November 2017 when this stopped working while we were on a trip and had downloaded movies to watch on our TV in the Mobil home. Downloaded movies worked up until that point.

Since then I have tested it with my iphone which has an older iOS 10.3.2 and it still works. I download a movie on my phone with netflix and it plays with my lightning AV adapter via hdmi. I don't know what version my netflix is but I am not updating till this gets resolved or maybe never.

Since then there has been another iOS update to my ipad to 11.2.2 and yesterday (1/15/2018) there was a netflix update too but this still did not fix the problem. Downloaded movies do not play on the TV using the lightning AV adapter. I get sound but no video in the TV.

I also have Amazon prime and downloaded movies play fine. Which leads me to believe its a netflix problem but Apple should vet its apps on the app store so its also their fault. The reason this is not a big issue is mainly because we are a small few that use it this way. Most folks stream and only download to view on planes or while traveling on their ipads or iphones, few actually connect a lightning adapter via hdmi to a TV. Yet here we are!

The real ****** is that Netflix nor Apple have anything posted regarding this and have all of us wondering what happened? Yes Netflix could change its policy and say something like downloaded movies are only for mobile devises etc although that would be a bad business move because Amazon allows it and movies over itunes also work. In any case they could change their policy but that needs to be posted somewhere or some information found somewhere. There should be a better way to voice ones frustration or complaint about this. I too am seriously thinking of canceling netflix mainly because i have cable and amazon and this it not getting any attention.

I am wondering if this isn’t Apple trying to drive us to the Apple TV app in our internet connected TV’s. Netflix may also be complacent.

Note also that this prevents using AirPlay to watch streaming Netflix on your physical TV.

I don’t think this is just a glitch or it would have been fixed by now, it’s a business decision.

I may have to get an android device as a work around or just give up on Netflix.

SOLUTION: I have found a work around to allow me to stream Netflix on my Apple TV. Forget your iPad and iOS, it seems to be designed to prevent this function for some reason. However, I am able to use my Mac laptop and my Netflix account to stream Netflix to the laptop and then mirror this to my TV over the Apple TV box. It’s a hassle but finally I can watch Netflix on the big screen. Note, this only works for streaming since Netflix doesn’t appear to allow downloading to a Mac.

I tried this first using my Lenovo Windows 7 laptop and an HDMI cable but it wouldn’t very well - very slow streaming and only the picture, no audio. Possible Netflix has some coding to make this challenging. I did read that Netflix allows some shows to be downloaded if the user connects with Windows 10.

Really frustrating that Apple and Netflix can’t improve the users experice here by allowing direct streaming from iPads to Apple TV!!! Why would Netflix want to force people to watch some of there great content on tiny iPads ? That really reduces the value of a subscription when you can’t watch a movie with friends or family.

Thanks for posting, but to clarify this thread is for issues where we are trying to watch previously Downloaded Netflix content held on an iPhone/ipad on a TV using lightening to HDMI connector as there is NO Wi-fi. This was possible pre IOS 11.

As an aside if you try and watch downloaded Netflix content through Apple TV it defaults to streaming it live over Wi-fi, which can lead to unexpected Wi-fi usage/cost (many other threads on this issue)

I’ve been struggling with the same issue for almost a month. I don’t have wifi @ home, so I download netflix titles from work. When I connect to my HDMI converter the phone mirrors. Youtube works fine. The Netflix menus even appear, but when I select a title to play, the play button, duration, and option buttons all appear, and then freeze. The sound comes through the tv, but the video continues playing on the phone.

My girlfriend found the solution. Close out the app. Go into settings>>netflix>>reset.

Open netflix app. You’ll need to then connect to the internet via wifi to sign back in. Once that’s done, you can (if desired) disconnect from wifi and netflix should mirror properly.
